Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Tickets

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) is based in the famous Orpheum Theater, which has been its permanent home since 1977. With an annual operating budget of a staggering 13.5 million dollars, the orchestra has set world class standards in terms of both its music as well as their shows. The mission of the VSO is to enrich people's life through the presentation of high quality performances of popular and classic music, and by initiating excellent community and education programs.

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1919 by the Vancouver Symphony Society, mainly due to the help of Elisabeth Rogers, an arts patron with a penchant for good music. The orchestra was established under the artistic talents of conductor Henry Green and was led under the leadership of President F.L. Beecher and Vice President Mrs B.T. Rogers.

The orchestra has seen its fair share of struggles, the biggest of which have revolved around financial problems. At times forced to stop operations, the orchestra has always managed to come back strongly and established its supremacy once again. From 1979-1980, the orchestra reportedly had the largest list of subscriptions for an orchestra, more than any other such company of the sort in North America.

The orchestra employs around seventy professional world class musicians who function under the orchestra's music director. The orchestra's current music director is Grammy Award winner Bramwell Tovey, a world renowned musician with striking versatility. Currently entering his fourteenth year as the company's artistic director, he is the winner of countless awards and accolades including the prestigious M. Joan Chalmers National Award for Artistic Direction.

Kazuyoshi Akiyama is the conductor laureate for the orchestra and served as Music director of the company from 1972 to 1985. He has served with some of the best orchestra's in the world and was awarded the Emperor's Purple Ribbon Medal in 2001 by the Japanese Government for his contribution to the country's musical culture.

The orchestra's composer in residence is Edward Top, a brilliant composer who fuses different music styles together and expresses the balance and struggle between them in rich, detailed orchestrations. The winner of multiple international and national awards, Top's work is presented brilliantly by the VSO.

In recent times, the orchestra has been going very strong. In 2008 the VSO won the Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (With Orchestra) Grammy Award for their recording of the Walton, Barber and Korngold violin concerti, featuring violinist James Ehnes. The recording also won the Juno Award in the category, Classical Album of the Year (Large Ensemble). In 2008 they also conducted a Tour of Asia which featured shows in Korea, Macau and China. 2009 saw the orchestra conduct a tour of Central Canada and in 2013 they went on a tour of the U.S. West Coast. In recent times the VSO has also started broadcasting live shows annually on the television network CBC.

So buy Vancouver Symphony Orchestra tickets and come witness one of the best orchestra's in North America performing live and get a chance to be inspired by the music that has touched millions of people around the world.
