Hailing from Santa Barbara, California, Toad the Wet Sprocket was founded in 1986. It comprises of band members, Glen Phillips who provides vocals, Todd Nichols playing the guitar, Dean Dinning on bass and Randy Guss handling the drums. All members have known each other from the San Marcos High School. At the time of the bands formation, Dinning was twenty, Guss and Nichols werenineteen and Phillips was only sixteen years old.
The first public show played by the ensemble was in the same year, when the quartet took part in an open-mic competition. Three years later the alternative band came forth with its debut self-financed studio release named "Bread & Circus". Released through the group's own independent label named Abe's Records, the studio album brought forth popular tracks such as "One Little Girl" and "Way Away". These singles were charted on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks Chart.
The following year saw another album release named "Pale". During the recording of the album, Toad The Wet Sprocket was approached by Columbia Records to sign a deal with the company. The band decided to re-release "Pale" through the record label company. Songs such "Jam" and "Come Back Down" became chart topping hits. These tracks were heard being playing continuously on college radio stations. During this time, the band's first music video was made by director Mark Miremont for the song "One Little Girl". It was seen making its debut on MTV's 120 Minutes.
Even with all these hits, Toad The Wet Sprocket still hadn't achieved the commercial success they were aiming for. They were finally able to make their big break after the release of their third album named "Fear" in 1991. The album received platinum certification by the RIAA and produced singles such as "Walk on the Ocean" and "All I Want" that were charted amongst the top 20 hits on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
Several songs such as "Little Heaven" and "Brother" from the studio release were featured on the soundtracks of movies, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "So I Married an Axe Murderer", respectively. After three years of heavy touring, the alternative ensemble came forth with its fourth studio album "Dulcinea" that enjoyed a similar success. Receiving platinum certification and spawning chart topping hits such as "Fall Down", Toad The Wet Sprocket was finally enjoying the success it deserved.
Toad The Wet Sprocket is home to a lineup that includes guitarist and vocalist Glen Phillips, bassist Dean Dinning, guitarist Todd Nichols and drummer Randy Guss. It rose to fame in the nineties with hits such as Fall Down, Walk on the Ocean, Something's Always Wrong and All I Want. It broke up in 1998 but returned in 2006, performing at venues spread out all over the US. It official reunited in 2010 with band members beginning work on their next studio album.
Toad The Wet Sprocket has a rich history behind it. Its name is inspired by a comedy sketch written by the famous Monty Python and titled as Rock Notes. This name was chosen as members thought it was funny, starting out as a joke and meant to be temporary. The name however stuck and the band grew famous after each performance, eventually being featured by Eric Idle who was the original performer in the Monty Python comedy sketch. He even went on to perform an extended skit on a fictional version of the band in one of his shows on Rutland Weekend TV as part of the Rutland Weekend Whistle Test.
Members of Toad The Wet Sprocket had known each other, having studied at the same high school. Their first performance was at an open mic contest in 1986. in 1989, they released their first album titled as Bread & Circus through their own label, Abe Records. It led to hit singles such as One Little Girl and Way Away which ranked high on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. In 1990, they released their next album with a more mature sound, having been signed onto Columbia Records. Singles from the album received a lot of airplay and their first album was also re-issued with new singles airing on MTV on shows such as 120 Minutes.
Their third album was released in 1991 and it was a massive hit, the band's commercial breakthrough. It was titled as fear and it saw two of its songs, Walk on the Ocean and All I Want rank in the top twenty of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album was eventually certified platinum by the RIAA and one of its songs was also part of the soundtrack of 1992's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Yet another one of the songs was featured in Mike Myers's So I Married an Axe Murderer. The band then went on tour and released Dulcinea in 1994. It ranked first on the US Modern Rock chart and fifth on the Mainstream Rock chart, a spectacular achievement. Toad The Wet Sprocket's Dulcinea was also certified platinum by the RIAA and was followed by 1995's compilation album, In Light Syrup. It was certified gold and one of its songs was part of the soundtrack of Friends, the famous TV comedy series.
