Ballet West The Tempest
The magic and aura of Shakespeare has always been there for us in some form of other. We read him, quote him, watch movies based on his masterpieces, watch theatre based on his work and the magic continues. It has been years and decades and centuries that the work from the greatest playwright is around us as it has been adapted many times by many people.

The latest on the list is Ballet West The Tempest, a theatre production based on one of the most popular plays of Shakespeare, The Tempest. Now most you may have already read the play or watched the previous productions based on it. But the current production should be your best bet as it revisited Shakespeare like never before. Read on to know more about Ballet West The Tempest.

Based on one of the great comedy plays by William Shakespeare, Ballet West brings new life in The Tempest. The theatrical production includes all the key elements of the original play and tells the story in a captivating manner. The Tempest relies on universal themes like love, greed, freedom, friendship, repentance and forgiveness.

It takes you to the world inhabited by Prospero, Miranda and Ariel. As the story goes, the tempest that is a violent storm causes the King Alonso of Naples, his brother Sebastian, his son Ferdinand, counselors Gonzalo and Antonio and his entire entourage to abandon the ship they are sailing after attending the wedding of Kings daughter in Tunis, Africa.

They are washed ashore on a strange island that has been inhabited by the Duke magician Prospero and his daughter Miranda for the last twelve years. They live in a cave on the island which is also inhabited by Ariel, a sprite who carries out the bidding of Prospero, and the ugly, half human Caliban.

Miranda sees the ship crack in the storm and tells her father about it but Prospero calms her and says that it was a magical illusion he created. What follows next is an exciting tale of love, revenge and magic as the charters unfold in a very dramatic style. While Alonso's son Ferdinand and Miranda immediately fall in love, Prospero wants revenge from Alonso.

Now the ones who have already read or seen the story may know the reason behind his dangerous intentions, we like to keep the suspense for the younger ones as there is nothing like watching the great work of great dramatist live in theatre. The only thing we can tell you is that the theatrical has a Shakespearean stamp and it takes the best from the story. Moreover, the production is quite pleasing as it culminates in a happy ending.

This celebrated tale of wrong doing, magic, shipwreck and young love has been adapted many times as a Ballet. The first ballet appeared in 1774 at Kings Theatre London followed by one in 1834 choreographed by Coralli. Another version of the show appeared in 1838 by Filippo Taglioni. Two other versions by Nordheim and Rudolf Nureyev appeared in 1979 and 1982 respectively.

There are many other theatrical productions that have taken influence from The Tempest. However, one adaptation that has always remained the best is the current one by Ballet West. It surely tops the list of all Shakespearean productions as it earned worldwide acclaimed for its great production value and superb execution.

The Tempest was created in 1980 by veteran choreographer Michael Smuin for the San Francisco Ballet with music by Paul Chihara and Purcell.
