The Kooks
The Kooks' is a UK based indie rock band. The kooks currently consists of guitarist and lead vocalist Luke Pritchard, lead guitarist and back up vocalist Hugh Harris, drummer Paul Garred and temporary bassist Dan Logan. The band has released two studio albums; both gained mainstream popularity on the UK Albums Chart.
The Kooks formed at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, where all its members were students. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Luke Pritchard got bassist Max Rafferty involved in a college project, which formed the base of the group. After getting lead guitarist Hugh Harris and drummer Paul Garred involved, they chose a name for their band from a song off the 1971 David Bowie album Hunky Dory, entitled 'Kooks'. The Kooks released a debut EP and performed at Brighton's Free Butt festival.
The kooks were instantly signed to Virgin Records. The band's hit song 'Naive' was written by Pritchard when he was only 16 years old, and the song after release catapulted the debut album, Inside In/Inside Out into the UK Top 20 charts. The album has attained triple platinum status and sold more than a million copies. Among the band's honors are nomination for Best New Act at the 2006 Q Awards and the award for Best UK and Ireland Act at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards.
'Konk' was the band's second studio album, produced by Tony Hoffer and released on 14 April 2008. The first single off the Konk was played on Zane Lowe's radio show. Konk, was ranked the Zane Lowe most anticipated album and also went straight to Number 1 in the UK Album chart. The album entered in at 2nd in the Irish Chart. 'RAK' is the second part of a limited edition 2 disc version of 'Konk' which contains 9 extra tracks including an alternate version of 'See the Sun' and a home demo called 'Brooklyn'.
In an interview with NME.com, Pritchard made it public that the band has '80 or 90' songs written and ready to record. He said he wants this album to be big. 'I've got an ego - I want the album to do well. I want our singles to come on the radio and for people to literally have their heads blown off by them' - said Pritchard. Bassist Max Rafferty officially left the band on 31th January after long standing rumors and Dan Logan, bassist with 'Cat the Dog', was brought in as a temporary replacement. The Kooks recently announced that the next single from the album will be 'Shine On'.
The Kooks will be playing in front of 40,000 people at the Isle Of MTV 2008 at the Floriana granaries, Malta, on 25th June 2008. Pathe filmed the opening of the studios, when Sir Edward Elgar played the London Symphony Orchestra in recording sessions of his music. The neighboring house is also owned and operated by the studio; also home to the musicians. During the mid-1900s the studio was extensively used by leading British conductor Sir Malcolm Sargent. The Gramophone Company later amalgamated with Columbia Graphophone Company to form EMI.
EMI took over the studios earning it a new name EMI Studios. Not before 1970, EMI formally changed their name to Abbey Road Studios. Studio Two at Abbey Road became a focal point of rock music in 1958 when Cliff Richard and the Drifters, later Cliff Richard and The Shadows, recorded 'Move It' there. Move it is arguably the first European rock and roll single.
The garage rock sounds of Kook got public as soon as they showed up in the music industry formally in 2004. The band is greatly influenced by the British invasion movement, which is widely reflected in their melodies. Taking the inspiration from the music of sixties, the band molds it into their own signature style ultimately giving a good hear of pop rock music.
Kook was formed by a group of friends attending Brighton Music College. Their common interests and liking of rock bands made them come up with their own sound of music. The bands which influenced them include Strokes, Police, Every Brothers and Funkadelic among others. Collectively they worked on their songs from writing the lyrics to composing sounds which showed up later in the year with the support of Virgin Records. Eddie's Gun, You Don't Love Me and Sofa Song happened to be the first major hits of the band.
Kook, since inception has developed its songwriting style over the years. Its musical presentation has also improved making the albums earn double Platinum and Gold certifications. It has released three studio albums so far, all getting great response from the RIAA and finding a place on the Top Music Charts.
Kook is known to engage the audiences in its live performances. People enjoy singing along and dancing to its groovy singles. It's time to enjoy pop rock music once again! So hurry and get your Kooks tickets right now!
