The King I is another epic by the team of Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rodgers. The musical takes its inspiration from the 1994 novel titled Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon. The play was an idea that was conceived by Fanny Holtzmann and she was the one who contacted Oscar and Richard to write the musical after reading the novel. The two of them were reluctant to work on the project but eventually agreed to do it. The plot revolves around the King of Siam and an English teacher Anna Leonowens in the early 1860's. Thailand was a closed backward country so the King decided to do something about it by introducing the more modern and sophisticated Western culture. For that he hires the attractive Anna Leonowens to come to Siam and teach royal children about that way of life. When Anna arrives in Siam, along with her five year old son Louis, she is shocked to find out that she won't be given a separate house of her own and that she will have to stay at the palace.

Meanwhile the King gets a young slave girl Tuptim from his counterpart in Burma to become one his many wives. Tuptim is brought to Siam by Lun Tha and the two are deeply in love with each other. The king and Anna see eye to eye on many things and shortly afterwards he gets the news that he is being portrayed in the Western world by some people as a barbarian. He tells Anna that a British delegation is being sent to Siam to see if the reports are correct. Anna advises the king to host a ball and a lavish dinner to welcome the delegation but they have to be inspired by the Western culture. The king agrees and slowly but surely the two start to warm each other. The British delegation comes and leaves happily but a new story of affection between Anna and the king had already started which captivates the fans all the way through to the very end.

The King I made its debut on Broadway on 29th March, 1951 at the stunning St. James Theatre. The musical became an instant hit that had both the critics and the fans raving about it. The success manifested itself into major awards including an impressive haul of five Tonys. That Broadway stint lasted for three years to close on 20th March, 1954. The success of the musical paved the way for its premier at the famous West End, London on 8th October, 1953. The venue for the London debut was Theatre Royal and just like its American predecessor it received glowing reviews from everyone. The classic has seen its re-incarnation on both Broadway and the West End more than once since then. These revivals have also earned Tony and Olivier awards to cement its reputation as one of the biggest hits of all time.

The King I has also graced the silver screen first as a musical film in 1956 and then as an animated movie in the year 1999. Its revival and conversion into a tour go to show how highly it is still regarded by every theater enthusiast. The fact it is still going as strong as ever is a testament to the level of excellence it has been able to create over the years.
