It seems the theater industry just keeps on giving, as each year new productions come into the limelight and manage to enthrall audiences with, either their moving storylines, or, their hilarious punch lines. In a similar vein, 2016 brought with it its own share of new plays and musicals to the big stage and quite a few managed to stick out from the pile. Yet there was one whose light shined brighter than the rest. This is  "The Humans."

Opening the door

The Humans is a play written by the brilliant writer Stephen Karam, and it was first stagedat the American Theatre Company in Chicago in 2014. From its very first night, it was clear that this was going to be one special production and it did not take too long for the show to be moved to Off Broadway where it premiered at the Roundabout Theater Company in 2015.

The positive reviews continued as the critics and audience members both praised it for its compelling storyline, as well as the engaging dialogue between the different characters. Within a year the Humans was transported to Broadway, where it premiered in February of 2016 at the Helen Hayes Theatre. Now you can experience this amazing production for yourself as well, if you wish. All you need are The Humans tickets and you can head down to Broadway for an unforgettable evening.

Crossing the threshold

The Humans follows the story of a modern family that gathers for thanksgiving dinner at the home of their youngest daughter, Brigid Blake, and her boyfriend Richard. They have just moved in to a new apartment in Manhattan and she wanted her family to spend some quality time with her over the holidays. Brigid's parents Erik and Deirdre Blake have driven all the way over from Scranton and are appalled at the rundown appearance of her new home. They have also brought Erik's mother along for the ride as well, yet she doesn't say much as she is suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Rounding up the cast of characters is Brigid's oldest sister, Aimee, who is a lawyer in Philadelphia, but is going through a painful breakup, as well as suffering from a debilitating disease called ulcerative colitis.

The interaction between the characters, and the complicated relationships they share, as well as the tendency for comedy in even the most serious of situations, is what has made this play so popular, and its writer world famous. Stephen Karam is among hottest new stars of the theatre world in recent times, and has been responsible for several plays over the years, many of which made it to Broadway as well. His first production was a musical called 'Emma' that came out in 2000 and even went on to win the Kennedy Center American College Theater (KCACTF) Musical Theatre Award. The Humans is his seventh major production to date, and over his career he has managed to win a New York Drama Critics Circle Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award, a Lucille Lortel Award and a Tony Award.

Time to talk

The Humans has been very well received in the theatre community, with many calling it amongst the best dramas to be presented on stage in recent years. Even though a lot of the credit goes to the writer of the play, Karam, much of its success is also down to its amazing director, Joe Mantello. He has been involved in over forty major productions since he first moved to New York back in 1984, and has worked as both an actor and a director. For his acting he won the Drama Desk Award in 1993 for his play 'Angels in America' and has won two Tony Awards to his name as a director as well.

The Humans has been rising in esteem ever since its Broadway premiere, and after its Tony Award win for Best Play, it is getting even more popular around the world. It has additionally won three more Tony Awards, along with three Drama Desk Award, a New York Drama Critics Circle Award and two Obie Awards. Now you can watch this award winning show live.
