All-Tchaikovsky Program at the music center will be featuring some great works of the very gifted Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky. This music genius was born in the town of Votkinsk in Vyatka Governorate of the Russian Empire. Music ran in his family as both of his parents were musicians as well as artists. When he was only five years old, he had already started taking piano lessons. He joined the famous Imperial School of Jurisprudence to complete a rigorous seven year course. In early 1860's, Tchaikovsky attended music theory classes and had the honor of learning from the master Nikolai Zaremba. After these classes, Tchaikovsky went on to enroll at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and continued to get lessons from Zaremba on counterpoint and harmony. The director of the conservatory was Anton Rubinstein, who taught him composition and instrumentation.
Tchaikovsky went on to composing his own works, plus he also started reprising the works of other masters such as Beethoven, Liszt, Mozart, Cimarosa, Anton Rubenstein, Schumann, Weber and Alexei Lvov. He is one of the five Russian composers who are often referred to as The Five. Together, these five masters reformed the shape of romantic Russian classic music and sought to produce specifically Russian type of music rather than following older European style. The other four in the list were Cesar Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, Alexander Borodin, Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov and Mily Balakirev. Tchaikovsky composed ballets like Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker. His famous operas include Vakula the Smith and The Queen of Spades. His commissioned pieces include Festival Overture on the Danish National Anthem, Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, Hamlet, The Storm, Marche Slave, The Voyevoda and 1812 Overture.
He went on to compose piano pieces like Romance in F minor, Souvenir de Haspal, Capriccio in G-flat, Valse-caprice in D major, The Seasons and Piano Sonata in G major. He revived the works of composers such as Mozart's Fantasia in C minor K 475 piano, Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 9 in A, Glinka Slavysa from A Life for the Tsar, Alexei Lvov's "God Save the Tsar!" and Weber's Piano Sonata in A flat and Piano Sonata in C.
