Some artistes have the flair to venture into different areas of competence providing a variety of showmanship to the audience. Steven Wright is one of them. He is an American actor, comedian and writer having won Academy Award for his talents. He delivers his acts with his distinct weary voice and is known for his deep, witty, mocking while at the same time perplexing or senseless jokes pertaining to dynamic scenarios. Steven Wright was brought up in Burlington, Massachusetts, his father being an electronics engineer who used to carried out testing of a great deal of stuff for the Apollo space program. When that program expired, he switched to truck driving as a vocation.

Steven Wright graduated from Emerson College in 1978 after acquiring an associate's degree from Middlesex Community College in Bedford, Massachusetts. After his graduation, he resorted to stand-up comedy in 1979 at the Boston comedy club. It was veterans like Woody Allen and George Carlin who made an impression on him thus influencing his acts. His big time came when he was carrying out one of his comedy acts with other performers at the comedy club Ding Ho in 1982, which was a half comedy club and half Chinese restaurant in his own words. He caught the eye of The executive producer of The Tonight Show (the highly popular late-night TV talk show) Peter Lassally. Lassally gave Wright a chance on The Tonight Show where he gave such a good shot with his act impressing host Johnny Carson and the studio audience that just one week later he was brought in for another routine. Steven Wright remained associated with Ding Ho for a long time after that delivering a reunion charity in May 2007 for a comic colleague who was went down with leukemia. Other former Ding Ho performers also participated in this charity affair.

Steven Wright won a Grammy Award nomination for Best Comedy Album with his comedy album titled I Have a Pony. The album was critically acclaimed and released on Warner Bros. Records. Next, his hard work earned him an Academy Award in 1989 for a thirty minute short film The Appointments of Dennis Jennings. Fellow producer Dean Parisot shared the award with him for this film which was scripted by Wright and Mike Armstrong, directed by Parisot and starred Rowan Atkinson and Wright. The comedian appeared in several TV productions also like a recurring appearance in Mad About You, a television sitcom. For the writer-director Quentin Tarantino's movie Reservoir Dogs, he provided his voice of the radio DJ.

Several lists of jokes are being circulated on the Internet that carry Wright's reference but in fact they are of a dubious source. This is very disheartening to Wright who opines that he was shown a website which portrayed that half of the matter was written by him which was actually not his work. Then he also saw one site that attributed the comedy to him but the fact was that he had written nothing. What troubles Steven Wright is that he identifies with very few of those jokes while majority of them are so substandard that he gets embarrassed of being associated with such work.

Steven Wright career has taken many exciting turns making him a contended artiste. He continued stand-up acts after he produced Wicker Chairs and Gravity, a comedy special in 1990. However, his appearances on television were few and far between with just guest spots on late-night talk shows. A 30-minute short "One Soldier" was written and directed by him in 1999. The theme revolved a soldier who had fought in the Civil War, carrying disturbing thoughts of the war after the war making him lose faith in the reality of God.

The year 2006 saw Steven Wright producing a stand-up program Steven Wright: When the Leaves Blow Away after a lapse of sixteen years. The program originally aired on Comedy Central in October 2006. In April 2007, its DVD was also available in the market. Wright continued experimenting with his projects and released I Still Have a Pony in September 2007, which was a sequel to I Have a Pony. The follow-up was successful and earned him a Grammy Award nominee for Best Comedy Album.

More glory came Wright's way when a short live-action film by him The Appointments of Dennis Jennings made him earn an Oscar in 1989. The film was co-written by him and Michael Armstrong in which starred also. Owing to his dynamic set of comedy routines, Steven Wright has been recognized by being the first one to be inducted to the Boston Comedy Hall of Fame in December 2008. Prior to that, he has been selected amongst the top fifty comedy acts by fellow comedians and comedy insiders in a 2005 survey. He has also been voted amongst the hundred greatest stand-up comedians on Comedy Central's list at number 23.

Comedy acts by such a vibrant star would bring sparkle to anyone's evening so brace yourself for Steven Wright !
