Born in Waco, Texas in 1945, Steve Martin belonged to a humble household. He was raised in Inglewood, California. Martin along with his family later moved to Garden Grove. After high school, he enrolled in the Santa Ana Junior College where he took an interest in drama and English poetry. When he was seventeen years of age, he tried his hand at playing the Banjo. Martin initially self-taught himself the basics of the banjo. Later on, John McEuen helped him learn how to play the banjo proficiently.
During his free time at college, Martin along with his high school friend, Kathy Westmoreland, participated in making comedies at the Bird Cage Theatre. Martin further developed comedies with budding actress and partner, Stormie Sherk. After college, Steve Martin enrolled in the California State University, where he studied philosophy. It had a profound effect on him and the way he thought about things. He transferred to UCLA, where he opted to pursue theatre. Steve Martin eventually dropped out from school at the age of twenty one and joined the exclusive club of dropouts, who go on to become highly successful.
Martin continued to follow his interest in music and joined John McEuen's band "Nitty Gritty Dirt Band". He performed his standup comedy routine before the bands performance. He also opened for "The Carpenters". His standup acts and hilarious comics gained popularity and he started to make regular television appearances. He was a usual on The Muppet Show and often hosted Saturday Night Live. In 1977 released his album "Let's Get Small" which made it to the tenth position on the Billboard Top 200 charts.
A year later, Martin came up with his even more popular album "A Wild and Crazy Guy" which made it to the second spot on the charts. Buoyed by his fame as a comedian, his works continued to garner positive reviews. In 1979, the album titled "Comedy Is Not Pretty!" Was released to much appreciation from fans, featuring an all instrumental jam.
"The Steve Martin Brothers" followed "Comedy Is Not Pretty!." While one side featured Martin playing the banjo with a bluegrass band, the other half of the album contained his much loved stand up material. However, the most noticeable achievement was yet to come for the multi-talented American. In 2001, he worked on the remake of "Foggy Mountain Breakdown". This version went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance at the 2002 Grammy's.
His musical achievements aside, Steve Martin has established a name for himself in the film industry as well. He has twice won the Golden Globe Award for his acting. His lead comic role in the film "Father of the Bride", earned him a MTV Movie Award nomination for Best Comedic Performance. In the sequel to the film he got a American Comedy Award nomination for Funniest Actor in a Motion Picture, along with a Golden Globe nomination for best actor.
His passion for Blue Grass music led him to establish the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass. Created in 2010, Martin set this up to promote Bluegrass music and bring the conventional genre to the forefront. The award comes with an incentive of a fifty thousand dollar cash prize award as well. His latest music album is a collaboration with Edie Brickell titled "Love Has Come for You".
