The game officially inaugurated in the NHL 1947-48 season. Before this it was played thrice to support former NHL players. This official game was between the All-Stars team who took over Toronto Maple Leafs, where the home team outshined. After this game onwards till the 1950 The All-Star game, the format remained the same. In 1951 the format was revamped; All-Stars vs. Stanley Cup Champions was replaced the First Team All-Stars vs. Second Team All-Stars. The first team was to get extra players the lineup from U.S. based ice hockey clubs namely Chicago, Boston, Detroit and New York. The second team was to take addition players from Toronto and Montreal. Interestingly this format causes ties the same year and the next; reverting to the old format. The very next season the last fighting majors were given to Bert Olmstead (Montreal) and Red Kelly (Detroit).
 
In 1967 the NHL All-Star game became a mid-seasonal fixture. This game was one of the best as it had the best record of thirty five saves; something that has never happened in an All-Star game. The 1968 ended as last one with All-Stars playing against defending Stanley Cup champions. The next year the new format, East Division vs. West Division was introduced. The game also rewarded players with prize money.
 
By the mid seventies, the game had settled down with a conference-based format i.e. The Wales Conference vs. the Campbell Conference. During the eighties the game saw wonderful talent coming and playing against each other. This was made more interesting when fans were allowed to vote and make starting lineups for game. A decade later the game format was changed to North American stars vs. international players.
 
During the 2000's the All-Star game suffered due to management issues. It made a comeback in 2007 and since then, the game is being played regularly every season.
