McDonald originally started off his career as a professional musician by being a backing vocalist for the band Steely Dan. Later, his years with the Doobie Brothers earned him mainstream popularity as he worked on numbers like Minute By Minute, What a Fool Believes and It Keeps You Runnin'. After disbandment of the group, McDonald embarked on a solo career which also produced several hit albums as well as singles. Apart from working in recording studio, McDonald keeps on touring live with his band from time to time. Currently McDonald is on a tour with Toto and has lined up many concerts for his fans in later months as well. Michael McDonald launched his professional career back in mid 70s as a backup vocalist for the group Steely Dan. With the band McDonald worked on Katy Lied, The Royal Scam, and Aja. Later in 1977, Michael McDonald became a member of the Doobie Brothers and worked on several hit numbers including What a Fool Believes. It earned him a Grammy Award for the "Song of the Year" in 1980 along with the co-writer Kenny Loggins. Following farewell tour of the Doobie Brothers in 1982, Michael McDonald decided to follow a solo career and released his solo debut album called If That's What It Takes in 1982.

Led by the popularity of his hit solo single I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near), his debut record reached 6th spot on the albums chart. While pursuing a solo career, Michael McDonald also kept on collaborating with other artists like Kenny Loggins. He also collaborated and co-wrote Van Halen's I'll Wait which made it to the Top 20 Chart. His collaboration with James Ingram on Yah Mo B There also earned him a Grammy Award for the "Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals" in 1985. Also in the same year, McDonald came up with his second album called No Lookin' Back, which wasn't as successful as his previous album but still spawned hit title track. In 1986 McDonald made his way back to the charts with a duet with Patti LaBelle called On My Own. The duet made its way to #1 which was followed by another charting hit titled Sweet Freedom.

McDonald's third album, Take it to Heart hit the shelves in 1990. With the album McDonald scored moderately successful title track followed by the success of his 1991's duet with Aretha Franklin called Ever Changing Times. After that McDonald released two more albums called Blink of an Eye and Blue Obsession, both of which failed to chart. His 2003's release of Motown became his first album since Take It to Heart that made it to the U.S Billboard 200 chart. It peaked at 14th spot and went on to enjoy platinum status later on, becoming his only solo studio album to do so. Motown paid homage to the Motown sound of music and was followed by a much more polished version called Motown Two in 2004.

Occasionally McDonald joined hands with the Doobie Brothers as a guest performer and also performed along with Steely Dan back in 2006. McDonald's most recent solo studio album came out in 2008 titled SoulSpeak which featured three new songs that were written by McDonald. Remainder of the album comprised of his interpretations of eleven inspirational songs from the soul music greats like Dionne Warwick and Stevie Wonder.

Over the past few years, McDonald has collaborated with several artists and performed at the events like 2011 NBA Finals.
