Starting his career in the late '90s with three independent albums, West has achieved worldwide recognition and fame. Born in 1977 in Downers Grove, Illinois, West was initially interested in making a successful career in baseball. He was a diehard fan of his hometown's baseball team, the Chicago Cubs. As a senior at Downers Grove North High School, he became team captain for his baseball team. West aspired to get a college baseball scholarship, but instead received a musical scholarship for four years at Millikin University in Decatur.

Upon insistence from friends and students at the University, West participated in the GMA Music in the Rockies event. This led to a meeting with a representative from a publishing agency who helped West through college and even after college. Just five weeks after graduation, West was offered a songwriting deal. West has cited that as a teenager, his first songs were written during college breaks when he came to live in the sanctuary of his father's church.

As a songwriter, West has written for some very high-profile musicians in the industry. His songwriting abilities diversified into different genres as he grew up. He has penned down songs in genres ranging from contemporary Christian to country.

Christian artists and bands such as Mandisa, Casting Crowns, Natalie Grant and Point of Grace among others have sung and performed songs written by West. In 1997, West released his first independent album September Sun, and it introduced him to the world. The following year, he released his second album, Every Step of the Way. Four years later, Sellout came out as his third and last independent album. West signed with Universal South Records in summer 2002 and since then he has released five studio albums, one holiday album and around twenty singles with major labels.

His debut album Happy, released in 2003, became one of the most highlighted Christian albums of that decade. The album's hit single, "More," peaked at number one on the Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart and also on the R&R's Christian Adult Contemporary chart. It remained there for nine weeks, breaking the previous record. Statistically, it was the most played Christian AC song in 2004. ASCAP labeled the single as the 'Christian Song of the Year'.

His next albums History, Something to Say and The Story of Your Life all peaked in the top 40 on the Christian Albums chart. The Story of Your Life charted at number three on the Billboard Christian Albums chart. These albums included hit singles like "Next Thing You Know," "Only Grace," "My Own Little World" and "Strong Enough," all of which made it to the top ten on the Hot Christian Songs chart. Two more singles "You Are Everything" and "The Motions" went on to the top the chart.

Matthew West's latest album, Into The Light, was released in 2012. The album gave his fans many hit singles and chart-toppers like "Forgiveness" and "Hello, My Name Is." The album peaked at number four on the Billboard's Christian Albums chart. The album continued the trend set by The Story of Your Life, in which West turned real-life stories of courage and heartache into songs.
