Mark Lanegan is an American singer-songwriter of the alternative rock form. In 1985, Lanegan started his musical career, creating the grunge group Screaming Trees with members Van Conner, Mark Pickerel and Gary Lee Conner. While working in the band, he also began a low-profile solo career, releasing his first studio offering in 1990 titled The Winding Sheet, and since then has issued six more albums for which he has gained critical recognition alongside moderate critical success. The artist has also had the experience of collaborating with several other rock acts and since the disbanding of his grunge band in 2000, he joined the hard rock band known as Queens of the Stone Age and was featured in three of their studio albums namely Lullabies to Paralyze, Songs for the Deaf and Rated R. Then in 2003 he, alongside Gerg Dulli formed Gutter Twins in 2003, and issued three collaborative albums with vocalist Isobel Campbell who use to work with Belle and Sebastian. Lanegan has also made contribution on albums by Mad Season, Soulsavers, Bomb the Bass, Creature with the Atom Brain, Martina Topley Bird, and Melissa Auf der Maur. Mark Lanegan's band Screaming Trees, alongside the likes of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains was part of the grunge trends that were gaining popularity in the music scene of Seattle. Lanegan formed the band in 1985, with Garry Lee Conner as the guitarist, and Mark Pickerel and Van Conner as the bassists. Their first five albums received moderate success with their fifth studio offering titled UncleAnesthesia producing the hit single called Bed of Roses that not only gained popularity on radio, it also reached the twenty-third spot on modern rock tracks being their first charting track. Their breakthrough came with the sixth studio album SweetOblivion which included the smash hit singles called DollarBill, Nearly Lost You, Shadow of the Season and Butterfly. The former became the subject of much airtime on radio stations dedicated to alternative rock, while the Nearly Lost You video gained considerable popularity by late 1992, on alternative radio songs and MTV. The single topped at number five on Modern Rock Tracks, while it peaked at number fifty in the UK, being the group's first international hit. SweetOblivion is conserved to be the band's most successful album with sales of three hundred thousand copies in the US.
In 1990, Mark Lanegan issued his first solo offering called The Winding Sheet on Sub Pop recording label, and including the songs Where Did You Sleep Last Night, Ain't It a Shame, and Down in the Dark, of which the latter featured backing vocals by Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain. Lanegan's second solo album, released in 1994 called Whiskey for the Holy Ghost, featured tracks such as Beggar's Blues, Ridingthe Nightingale, Kingdoms of Rain, and The River Rise. Between 1995 and 2000, the artist made appearance on other band's albums while also releasing his own, such as Mad Season's Above, in which he contributed to the songs, I'm Above and Long Gone Day, and the album Scraps at Midnight, which was produced by his long-time collaborator and friend, Mike Johnson. He then released his fifth solo project called I'll Take Care of You, featuring many covers of tracks by Tim Hardin, Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Buck Owen and Booker T. the MGs. In 2001, he issued his fifth album titled FieldSongs featuring contributions from Duff McKagan, and bassist from Soundgarden, Ben Shepherd.
Mark Lanegan released Bubblegum in 2004, on which he was joined by several renowned musicians such as Josh Homme, Queens of the Stone Age's Nick Oliveri, P.J. Harvey, The Afghan Wings' Grer Dulli, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, Twilight Singers and Ween's Deen Ween.
