His discography to date is home to three EPs, one mixtape and two studio albums. His music video for his song, Thrift Shop, has attracted more than three hundred million views on YouTube, with the song itself ranking first on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. To date, the song has sold over two million two hundred thousand copies.
It was followed by another single, titled Cant Hold Us, which also ranked number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making him and collaborator Ryan Lewis the first duo in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 to have their first two singles top the chart, as well as the first to achieve the feat without being signed onto a major record label. His first album was released in 2012, titled The Heist, and it ranked second on the Billboard 200 chart.
Macklemore studied at the Garfield High School and Nathan Hale High School, and the went on to study at The Evergreen State College. At a young age of six, he had grown fond of hip hop after listening to Digital Underground. By the age of fourteen, he was writing lyrics for songs and then went on to be influenced by the underground hip hope scene in the West Coast, by music from Freestyle Fellowship, Living Legends, Aceyalone, Nas, Wu-Tang Clan and Talib Kweli, artists and groups who influenced his music a lot.
In 2000, he entered into the world of music when he released Open Your Eyes, as Professor Macklemore. In 2005, he dropped the professor and then released an album, titled The Language of My World. In 2009, he released a mixtape titled The Unplannned Mixtape and then collaborated with producer Ryan Lewis to record the VS. Redux EP, whose song Otherside was critically acclaimed, which contained samples from a Red Hot Chili Peppers song of the same name. He then attracted the attention of The Agency Group, a booking accompany that represents such groups as Finger Eleven and A Tribe Called Quest.
He has since then continued to collaborate with Ryan Lewis, becoming a duo of sorts. In 2009, he was featured on a song by The Physics and in 2010, he performed at the Capitol Hill Block Party. In 2010, with Ryan Lewis, he released a track dubbed Stay At Home Dad and then performed at the Colrodao College. He then released My Oh My, a tribute song to Dave Niehaus, broadcaster of the Seattle Mariners, who had then recently passed away.
In 2011, he performed with Ryan Lewis as a duo at the Mariner's Opening Day to an audience forty eight thousand large. By that time, his EP, The VS. Redux, has ranked seventh on the iTunes Hip Hop chart. In 2012, the duo released their first full length studio album, titled The Heist, followed by a tour promoting the album. It included such popular singes as Cant Hold Us, Wings and My Oh My. On of its songs, Cant Hold Us, was used by Miller beer in an ad aired in Ireland and the UK, leading to more fame for the group in Europe. Similarly, another one of its singles, White Walls, featured Schoolboy Q. The album ranked first on the iTunes Albums chart in just hours of list, ranked second on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over seventy eight thousand copies in a week, a feat that lead to many buying up Macklemore tickets.
