Lucinda Williams
Lucinda Williams is an American rock, folk, and country music singer and songwriter. She has the honor of winning three Grammy Awards. TIME magazine has named Lucinda Williams "America's best songwriter" in 2002.
Early life
Williams was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana on January 26, 1953. She was the daughter of poet and literature professor Miller Williams. Before settling at the University of Arkansas, Her father worked as a visiting professor in Mexico and Chile as well as different parts of the American South.
Williams showed an affinity for music at an early age. She began playing guitar at 12.
Career
Williams was playing publicly in Austin, Texas and Houston, Texas by her early 20s. Her music was concentrated on a folk-rock-country blend. In 1978, She moved to Jackson, Mississippi to record her first album, for Smithsonian/Folkways Records. Titled Ramblin' was a collection of country and blues covers. She followed it up in 1980 with Happy Woman Blues, which consisted of her own material. Unfortunately, her first two albums could not bring the desired success.
Williams moved to Los Angeles, California in the 1980s where she developed a following and a critical reputation by performing both backed by a rock band and in acoustic settings.Nevertheless, it was not until 1988 that Rough Trade Records released the self-titled Lucinda Williams. The single "Changed the Locks", received radio play around the country. The song was about a broken relationship. The single was successful in gaining fans among music insiders, including Tom Petty, who would later cover the song. Its follow-up, Sweet Old World (Chameleon, 1992), was a melancholy album. Themes of suicide and death were dealt in this album.
Williams's biggest success came as a songwriter during the early '90s. A cover of "Passionate Kisses" (from Lucinda Williams) was recorded by Mary Chapin Carpenter recorded in 1992. The song became a smash country hit for which Williams rewarded with the Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 1994.
Williams's commercial success was moderate even though she had garnered considerable critical acclaim.
As far as recording was concerned, Williams also gained a reputation as a perfectionist and slow worker. She took six years for releasing her next album. However, during this period, She appeared as a guest on other artists' albums and contributed to several tribute compilations.
Williams' breakthrough to the mainstream was possible by the long-awaited release, 1998's Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. She received a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
The album received wide critical notice and soon went gold due to the single "Still I Long for Your Kiss" from the Robert Redford film The Horse Whisperer. Considerable cross-over radio play was also enjoyed by the single "Can't Let Go". In support of the album,Williams toured individually and with Bob Dylan.
The single "Get Right With God" won Williams the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock performance.
In 2003, She release her seventh album, World Without Tears. It was a musically adventurous though lyrically downbeat album. This release found Williams experimenting with talking blues stylings and electric blues.
In 2006, Lucinda was successful in recording a version of the John Hartford classic "Gentle On My Mind," which played over the closing credits of the Will Ferrell filmTalladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby
Williams was a guest vocalist on the song "Factory Girls" from Irish punk-folk band Flogging Molly's 2004 album, "Within a Mile of Home". She also appeared on Elvis Costello's The Delivery Man.
Her latest album titled West containing over 27 songs was released on February 13, 2007. 13 tracks are included in this album. It has a similar sound to World Without Tears. Her mothers' death and a tumultous relationship break-up are addressed in this album.

Fusing the right genres yet maintaining a commercial appeal, it was a RIAA gold certification and Grammy winner.
From Car Wheels on a Gravel Road onwards she has given six studio albums in a decade. Live Fillmore, Essence and Little Honey became much critically acclaimed of these releases.
