Born in Montreal, Canada in the year 1959, Louis Lortie had an interest in music from a very young age. He performed for the very first time when he was only thirteen years old, as part of the Montreal Symphony. After three years had passed and he was sixteen years old, he became part of the Toronto Symphony. This resulted in him going on a historic tour of Japan and People's Republic of China. He managed to win First Prize in the Busoni Competition in the yeat 1984. In addition to that, he also received a prize at the Leeds Competition. Ever since then, he has consistently given performances with some of the best recitals and most prestigious orchestras.
Over the course of time, Louis Lortie has studied with numerous big names. Some of the musicians he has studied with include Leon Fleisher, Dieter Weber in Vienna who was a specialist in Beethoven; and Yvonne Hubert, who was taught by the great Alfred Cortot, a famous French piano player. Moreover, Lortie's influences include Joseph Gingold, who is an extremely popular chamber music teacher as well as a violin player.
Louis Lortie did the full work of Ravel for CBC and BBC in London and Montreal along with full sonata cycles of Beethoven in the Berlin Philharmonic, the Wigmore Hall in London and the Ford Centre at Toronto. His performance was called "possibly the most beautiful Beethoven since the times of Wilhelm Kempff" by Die Welt. Lortie was also a feature artist in a festival which celebrated Beethoven's music in Montreal. He performed various sonatas of Beethoven at the festival along with other musicians.
In addition to that, he has given several other appearances including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Dresden Staatskapelle, the BBC Symphony at the Proms, the London Symphony, RAI Torino, London Mozart Players, Royal Scottish National, the Dutch Radio Symphony, La Scala Milan and many more as well. Louis Lortie has worked along with numerous conductors such as Vanska, Slatkin, Sawallisch, Saraste, Kurt Sanderling, Pesek, Neemi Jaervi, Graf, Fruhbeck de Burgos, Flor, Elder, Andrew Davis and countless more as well.
Louis Lortie has created more than thirty recordings with a recording company known as the Chandos, from Stravinsky to Mozart and much more in between. He has also won numerous awards and honors including the Edison Award for the Eroica Variations of Beethoven. BBC Music Magazine named one of his records the best CDs of the year.
When he is free, he spends his time teaching piano lessons in Imola, Italy where he exposes the students to various kinds of methods of piano playing.
