Later, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band came up with their own version of the song which was even more successful than Walker's original release and made it to the Top Ten of 1971's pop charts.

The maestro's biggest success came with his 1973 album Viva Terlingua which he recorded with the Lost Gonzo Band in the town of Luckenbach. The album received Gold certification and also four and a half stars from Allmusic. It also went on to become Walker's largest selling album and established him as one of the leading country music singers of the industry. From that time onwards, there was no turning back for Walker. He then released a series of albums under different popular recording labels such as MCA, Warner Bros., T&TM, Sawdust Records, Hip-O Records and Elektra. At present, the artist has a total of 37 albums and 13 singles to his name. Many of his singles have found their place on the US Top 100 Country Music charts and so have most of his albums.
