It all started with the formation of the Houston Fat Stock Show and Livestock Exposition in 1931 after seven friends from Texas decided to do something new to promote livestock farming. The very next year they held the first show and within six years the organization had managed to build their own arena. Soon after they started giving scholarships and in 1957 Ben Dickerson became the first recipient of a two thousand dollar educational scholarship. The event's current name was adopted in 1961 and after several years of hard work, the show was broadcast on national television for the first time in 1994.
Since that time, the whole event has become one of the premier festivals in the city of Houston. It has increased the popularity of the city and has become a symbol for the whole community there. The show has helped out a large amount of people in pursuing their dreams and making a career in this field by offering them scholarships in excess of ten thousand dollars each.
