Fordham Rams and George Washington Colonials are playing their next basketball game at the Colonials home arena, Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. The Rams are the varsity sports teams of Fordham University and participate in NCAA Division I. They also compete in Atlantic 10 Conference in all sports with the exception of football. Their basketball team was a member of MAAC and Patriot League before joining the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Rams men's basketball team has been playing since 1902 and has been part of four NCAA Tournaments along with sixteen NITs. George Washington Colonials are the varsity teams of George Washington University that also competes in Atlantic 10 Conference. Their basketball team last made it to the NCAA Division I in 2007. The team has won five Conference tournament championships and one NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. It has appeared in the NCAA Tournament ten times between 1954 and 2007. The Rams team played its first basketball game against Boston College in 1925 in Rose Hill Gymnasium, which continues to be their current home arena. The Rams' best recorded season was that of 1970-1971, for which the team was ranked as the nation's ninth best by the AP poll. The Fordham men have won various big games through the years including the Patriot League of 1991. The team recorded its first winless streak in the A-10 conference in the 2009-2019 season. This terrible streak came to an end in the final game of the 2010-2011 season. By the completion of this season, the team's cumulative record gave it a winning rate of more than fifty percent. 

The Colonials basketball team first participated in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen against Michigan's Fab Five University in 1993. It next stepped back to play at the national level in 2004 after winning from Maryland and Michigan State in consecutive games. It was then competing in the BB&T Classic of 2004. The same year the team won the Atlantic 10 West and Atlantic 10 Tournament titles, which brought it to the NCAA Tournament of 2005. It then received a number twelve seed, but lost the first round to number five seed Georgia Tech. The Colonials team has played some incredible games over the years and many of its players have made it to the NBA. These include Corky Devlin, Joe Holup, Gene Guarilia, Mike Brown, Yinka Dare and Mike Hall, among others.
