As validation of her immense talent, Dawn Upshaw has won multiple awards including the much sought after Grammy awards as well as the Edison Prize-winning disc. Her musical prowess includes expertise in opera as well as art song, and her range extends from Baroque to contemporary music. Due to her vast achievements in the genre of music, Dawn Upshaw was awarded the coveted MacArthur Fellowship in the year 2007.
The signs were evident from the start as Dawn began her journey at the Rich East High School in Park Forest, Illinois. She would further her vocal career by attending the Interlochen Arts Academy. In 1982 she graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University, having studied voice under the late great Dr. David Nott. She continued to work on her vocals at the Ellen Faull at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, where she got her Masters degree in 1984. In addition to this she also availed of other musical courses.
Thus, it came as no surprise to anyone when her precocious talent was appreciated when she won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions Award and the Walter M. Naumburg Competition in 1984 and 1985 respectively. As a result of these achievements, Dawn Upshaw was made a member of the Metropolitan Opera Young Artists Development Program. Such has been her rate of work that since her debut, Dawn has appeared more than 300 times at the Metropolitan Opera.
However it was her collaboration with David Zinman in 1993 on the Symphony No 3 by Henryk Gorecki, also known as the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs that announced to the world that Dawn Upshaw had arrived on the big scene. Her record sold well over a million copies and established Dawn as a force to be reckoned with. The last ten years have seen her meteoric rise go to even more unbelievable heights as she has appeared in more than 25 productions created especially for her. This includes the opera L'Amour de Loin by Kaija Saariaho which won the Grawemeyer Award, The Great Gatsby by John Harbison, El Nino by John Adams and last but not least, the highly acclaimed collaborations with Osvaldo Golijov on both the chamber opera Ainadamar and Ayre. She was honored with the chance to premier David Bruce's song cycle The North Wind was a Woman at the Chamber Music Society of the Lincoln Centre in 2009.
