Corrosion of Conformity, also frequently referred to as C.O.C., is a heavy metal band that was formed in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1982. The band has gone through numerous lineup changes during all the years that they have been active; however they have continuously maintained their presence in the hardcore music scene. Having started out as a hardcore punk band, as their lineup changed, so did their sound. They eventually moved towards a more heavy metal sound; a sound which defines who they are today.

To date, the band has released seven full length studio albums, the most recent of which, IX, was released in 2014. In 2016, the band will be heading out on tour with metal giants Lamb of God and Clutch on a full North American tour. Grab your Corrosion of Conformity tickets because this road trip promises to be an incredible event!

Formation and Early Years

C.O.C. was officially formed in 1982. The band comprised vocalist and bassist Mike Dean, drummer Reed Mullin and guitarist Woody Weatherman. Initially they had another vocalist by the name of Eric Eycke, with whom they recorded the album, Eye for an Eye. He didn't last long and left the band shortly afterward. C.O.C. continued on for a few years as just a three man team.

Corrosion of Conformity was heavily influenced by metal heavyweights Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Scorpions and Iron Maiden. They also drew influence from bands in the hardcore punk genre such as Minor Threat, Germs, Black Flag, Circle Jerks and Bad Brains. Their debut album featured a blend of these influences and was released in 1984.

In 1985, they released their second album, Animosity. On this record, Dean and Mullin shared vocal duties and made for a more harmonic sound. A couple of years later, the band recruited Simon Bob Sinister to join the band, and subsequently released the album Technocracy in 1987. This album saw the band move in the direction of a more hectic thrash sound mixed with cleaner vocals than they had in the past.

The Years of Flux

It wasn't always smooth sailing for Corrosion of Conformity. In 1987, founding member Mike Dean left the band, followed by Simon Bob Sinister. This left C.O.C. in a tricky situation and they were forced to go on a hiatus as they searched for new members.

The new lineup of C.O.C. featured Karl Agell on vocals, Pepper Keenan as another guitarist and Phil Swisher on bass. With these new members the band released the album Blind in 1991. It was the first album that got the band mainstream attention, with their songs being played on MTV and even charting on the Billboard Heatseakers Chart.

More Line-Up Changes and New Albums

In 1993, new members Agell and Swisher left the band, and founding member Dean returned. In 1994 the band signed with Columbia records and released the album Deliverance. This album was COC's most successful album and had singles which became top hits on rock radio stations including "Albatross" and "Clean My Wounds". The album was also on the Billboard 200 chart for four months, as well as the Heatseekers chart, on which it stayed for over a year and peaked at number five. It is estimated that the album has sold close to 500,000 copies in the U.S. and therefore may be eligible for gold status soon.

In 1996, the album Wiseblood was released; it featured the hit single 'Drowning in a Daydream', which was nominated for a Grammy Award for the "Best Metal Performance." In support of this album, COC also did a worldwide tour with Metallica.

COC then switched record labels and signed with Sanctuary Records. They released the albums America's Volume Dealer and In The Arms of God under this label. This was followed by a long hiatus for the band between 2006 and 2010, after which they signed with Candlelight Records and released a self-titled album in 2012. That was followed by their most recent release, IX, in 2014.

Corrosion of Conformity Today

In 2015 COC announced that they would be reuniting with the Deliverance era line-up. This includes Mike Dean, Pepper Keenan, Reed Mullin and Woody Weatherman. The band has already performed several shows since reuniting and in 2016 they will be touring with Lamb of God and Clutch.
