The Connecticut Whale's general manager is Jim Schoenfeld with Ken Gernander as the head coach. In the media, the team's partner is The Rock 106.9 WCCC-FM. It is affiliated with the New York Rangers of the NHL and the Greenville Road Warriors of the ECHL. They were known as the Providence Reds from their founding until 1976. After that, they spent a year as the Rhode Island Reds and three as the Binghamton Dusters. From 1980 until 1990, they were known as the Binhamton Whalers and then as the Binghamton Rangers for seven more.

They then moved to Hartford, becoming the Hartford Wolf Pack from 1997 to 2010. Since 2010, they have been known as the Connecticut Whale. They are the proud owners of one regular season title and three Division Championships, the last two of which were won in 2004 and 2009. They have also won one Conference Championship and one Calder Cup, the AHL's greatest achievement.

The Connecticut Whale were originally named the Wolf Pack after a name the team contest and in honor of the state's naval tradition since it was home to the main submarine base of the US Navy and the main builder of submarines, General Dynamics Electric Boat. The first ever coach of the team was E.J McGuire and in their very first game, they defeated the Springfield Falcons by 2-0.

The Connecticut Whale have missed only one playoff during the course of their career, making it to all other playoffs.
