Getting Involved in Comedy

Born in Lower Manhattan, New York, Chevy Chase started to get involved in comedy when he was enrolled in Haverford College. He then slowly began to build his reputation as a comedian but before long, Chase began to grow a liking for music and joined the group, The Leather Canary which was led by his school friends, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker who later formed Steely Dan. He then became a member of a rock band, 'Chamaeleon Church' which recorded one self-titled studio album before the group dissolved. During the late '60, he decided to start his own underground comedy ensemble 'Channel One.' He then started working on the television show, 'Smothers Brothers' as a writer before Chase thought to pursue comedy full-time in 1973.

Chevy Chase began his journey as a comedian by becoming a cast member of The National Lampoon Radio Hour. He then also starred in The National Lampoon's off-Broadway revue Lemmings in which he played the piano and drums during the musical numbers.

Joining Saturday Night Live

In October of 1975, Chevy Chase landed a job as a cast member of Saturday Night Live (SNL). He began to perform comedy skits on the show which gave a boost to his popularity. In one of his comical sketches, he mimicked the real-life incident in which the president Gerald Ford tripped while disembarking from Air Force One. This portrayal of Ford was well-received by the public which helped him become even more famous.

Chevy Chase tasted great success during his time with Saturday Night Live and won a Golden Globe and two Emmy Awards. He also received positive reviews from different publications including New York which called him as, 'The Funniest Man in America.'
