Carol Burnett was a popular name during the 70s due to her hosting of the most popular TV show, The Carol Burnett Show which was a variety show consisting of song, dance and comedy. With regular cast members Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, Lyle Waggoner and then Tim Conway, the show featured Burnett in slapstick parody of celebrities, distinguishing characters and movies. Since then she is known as a comedy veteran in the US. Besides that, Burnett is also known for her acting and singing roles in number of movies and Broadway shows. Raised by her grandmother in a poor neighborhood of Hollywood, California, Carol Burnett always had dreams of working on the big screen. That was the reason that in her first year at the University of California, Los Angeles, she switched from studying Journalism to Theatre Arts and English. She took part in several musical and comedy productions at the university. The quick recognition proved the fact that she was a natural when it came to acting, singing or even dancing. Encouraged by all that, Burnett with hopes of furthering her acting career, left the university and moved to New York in mid 50s. There she grabbed small roles on various TV programs like Winchell-Mahoney Show and the comedy show, Stanley. To make ends meet, she took up cabaret performances and soon gained popularity in the New York cabarets and night clubs. However what led to her exposure on television was her CBS Morning Show guest appearance in 1956 with Garry Moore. After that, Moore cast her for his Garry Moore Show in 1959. That year proved to be her lucky year as she also received rave reviews for her Broadway performance in a musical comedy, "Once upon a Mattress". ""an Emmy award for her "Outstanding Performance in a Variety or Musical Program or Series". It was a time when she was making headlines quite frequently and her popularity graph was constantly on the rise. In 1962 Carol co-starred with Julie Andrews on the Emmy award winning special Julie and Carol at - - later became Carol's husband. The popular The Carol Burnett Show debuted in 1967 on CBS and ran till 1978 garnering wide acclaim and numerous Emmys. The weekly guest stars were the top names of the time such as Cher, Jim Naybors & Julie Andrews.

Besides comedy on television, Carol Burnett has also done a few serious roles like in the TV movie, Friendly Fire, then a role in a movie about an alcoholism fighting woman titled Life of The Party: The Story of Beatrice. Other notable works include Annie, The Four Seasons and Noises Off. Over the years, Burnett was also involved with few other Broadway shows, like the 1995 Moon Over Buffalo in 1995-96 season and Putting It Together in 1999-2000. Among her most recent works was her guest appearance in 2006 in the highly popular hit TV series Desperate Housewives. Her other guest appearance was on the TV show, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2009. It got her nominated for the Emmy in the category of Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. Even today, whenever she is performing anywhere, the demand for Carol Burnett tickets is always high as compared to many other names of her time.

To add to her award winning career, Carol Burnett has also written an autobiography, One More Time: A Memoir, the material of which was the basis for 2002 Broadway play Hollywood Arms. Burnett's daughter, Carrie Hamilton co authored the piece with her.

Burnett's talents have been recognized and honored by the critics and various other organizations. She was awarded a start on the Hollywood Walk of Fame close to the Hollywood Pacific Theatre. Her long list of Emmys includes awards for Outstanding Performance in a Variety or Musical Program or Comedy Series for her roles in The Garry Moore Show, Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall and An Evening with Carol Burnet in the 70s. The Carol Burnett Show, with Joe Hamilton had also garnered several awards in best Comedy-Variety or Music Series categories. In 1997, she also got an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in Mad About You. In addition to Emmy awards, Burnett has also grabbed Golden Globe Awards for her performance in The Carol Burnett Show. Most recently, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife Maria Shriver put forward Carol Burnett as a 2009 California Hall of Fame candidate. Age doesn't stop her.
