Canadian Brass
The virtuosi of Canadian Brass have made the brass quintet an exciting vehicle for serious concert music. The quintet has a long history of recording classical music collection and they have just celebrated its 35th season.

They have a special likeness for Baroque music, which requires the brilliance and musical structure that has become the Canadian Brass trademark.

Their more than 60 recordings to date include works by Purcell, Vivaldi, Gabrieli, Pachelbel, Beethoven and Wagner and all in scrupulously crafted transcriptions that are setting new musical traditions in brass performance. They are especially drawn to the works of J.S. Bach.

The Canadian Brass sprang from modest and highly experimental roots in Toronto, Ontario, in 1970. The brass quintet was not established as a serious concert group at that time, and proved an irresistible challenge to Gene and Chuck. Their imagination and expert musicianship eventually elevated the art of the brass quintet to what it is today.

Because of their pioneer status, the quintet developed a unique character and affinity with audiences that proved so successful that it has been emulated by many other ensembles. Canadian Brass master the gamut of concert presentations which ranged from formal classical concerts to music served up with lively dialogue and theatrical effects. No matter what the style, the music is central and performed with utmost dedication and excellence.

The fabulous five spend most of their time on tour, and have performed with many major symphony orchestras in the US, Canada, Europe and Japan. They have gained a large international following of their solo performances offering a large variety of musical styles.

Canadian Brass set out to create their own musical world by transcribing, arranging and commissioning more than 200 works; Having started with the very limited base of traditional works for brass, the most recent being the brilliant Quintet by Michael Kamen.

They are not only presenting works in the classical repertoire but continue to take daring leaps into jazz, contemporary concert music and popular songs. This has been most recently exemplified by collaborations with young baritone Giles Tomkins on his classical-crossover debut And So It Goes, and the Brass release High Society, a collection of early jazz favorites arranged for the group by Duke Ellingtons legendary collaborator Luther Henderson. The work of the Canadian Brass is the inspiration and musical staple of students and brass ensembles in North America and Europe.

Millions of television viewers have seen the Canadian Brass in such shows as The Tonight Show, Today, and Entertainment Tonight. They have appeared as guest artists on Evening at Pops with John Williams and the Boston Pops, Beverly Sills Music Around the World, and numerous PBS specials.

The quintet has also created eight videos that have gained an international audience and has just released a DVD that captures the group in performance over three decades entitled Three Nights with Canadian Brass.

All members of the Canadian Brass are keenly interested in training the next generation of players. They often pause for master classes on their travels around the world. The famous five are chamber quintet-in-residence at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California.

Additionally, they have created an innovative brass summer course at the famous Eastman School of Music. They have been invited by the Canadian Government to play for visiting heads of states on numerous official occasions.

The current members are: Dr. Charles Chuck Daellenbach (tuba), Eugene Gene Watts (trombone), Jeff Nelsen (horn), Joe Burgstaller and Brandon Ridenour (trumpet) as well as the Trumpet Dream Team to often fill the two trumpet positions on rotating basis.

Past members include: Stuart Laughton (1970-1971, 2003-2005), Josef Burgstaller (2001-present), Jeff Nelsen (2000-2004, 2007-present), Ryan Anthony (2000-2003), Frederick Mills (1972-1996), Ronald Romm (1971-2000), David Ohanian (1986-1998), Martin Hackleman (1983-1986), Christopher Cooper (1998-2000) and Graeme Page (1970-1983). Canadian Brass recordings are released by Toronto-based Opening Day Entertainment Group.

The crash boom bang of a brass band has become the mainstay of any celebration or commemoration. Whether it's a military tribute, cultural festival or a parade, the brass band is there to add much gaiety and flair. Canadian Brass has carried forth this tradition to music listening audiences everywhere and has produced enough music in the past four decades to make it feel like that every day is Independence Day.

Trombonist Eugene Watts and his longtime friend and tuba player Chuck Daellenbach teamed up in 1970 to lay the foundation of Canadian Brass. The band soon morphed into a quintet with the addition of trumpeters Bill Philips, Stuart Laughton and Ron Romm. Though the former two soon departed the band, a string of over a dozen musicians has kept the act's lineup alive and kicking throughout the decades.

Having recorded nearly eight dozen albums and a dozen video recordings that are all available on CDs and DVDs, they have become the standard bearers for brass music the world over. Their albums have clocked over 2 million in world sales and have notched high rankings on charts, such as Stars & Stripes: Canadian Brass Salute America that peaked at #2 Billboard Classical Chart in 2010.

Over the years, Canadian Brass have served as cultural ambassadors, first with their American debut in 1975 at the Kennedy Center and then two years later as part of the first troupe of Western musicians to perform on mainland China following Mao's Cultural Revolution.
