The Brandon Wheat Kings
They are a Canadian junior ice hockey team based in Brandon, Manitoba. They compete in the Western Hockey League, and joined the league in the 1967-68 season. They have appeared in the Memorial Cup four times: in 1949, 1979, 1995, and 1996, losing each time. The team plays its home games in Westman Communications Group Place. They also played at Wheat City Arena until 1969 and the Manex Arena from 1969 to 1972.An earlier incarnation of the Wheat Kings played for the Stanley Cup in 1904, but lost to the Ottawa Senators. The Wheat Kings hold the CHL record for most points in a single season, setting the mark in 1978-79.

The 1949 Memorial Cup final was a best of 7 series between the Montreal Royals, winners of the George Richardson Memorial Trophy, and the Brandon Wheat Kings, winners of the Abbott Cup, held at the Shea's Amphitheatre in Winnipeg, Manitoba and the Wheat City Arena in Brandon, Manitoba. Montreal won their 1st Memorial Cup, defeating Brandon in 8 games.

The 1979 Memorial Cup
It occurred May 6-May 13 at the Palais des Sports in Sherbrooke, Quebec, the Colis?e de Trois-Rivieres in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec and at the Verdun Auditorium in Verdun, Quebec. Participating teams were the winners of the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Western Hockey League which were the Peterborough Petes, Trois-Rivieres Draveurs and Brandon Wheat Kings. Peterborough won their first Memorial Cup, defeating Brandon in the final game.

The 1978-79 WHL season
It was the 13th season for the Western Hockey League. Twelve teams completed a 72 game season. The Brandon Wheat Kings won the President's Cup.The 1995-96 WHL season was the 30th season for the Western Hockey League. Seventeen teams completed a 72 game season. The Brandon Wheat Kings won the President's Cup.High scoring left-winger Brian Propp, all star defenseman Wade Redden and former captain Ryan Craig finished 1-2-3 in this year's Fan voting for the Top Forty Players in franchise history.

A former first round draft choice of the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1979 NHL entry draft, Propp is Brandon's all time leading scorer with 511 points including 219 goals. In fifteen NHL seasons, Propp scored 425 goals and 1,004 points in 1,016 games. A 2-time WHL scoring champion, Propp played for the Flyers, Boston Bruins, Minnesota North Stars and Hartford Whalers.

The WHL's Top Rookie in 1993-94, Redden played three years in Brandon, scoring 27 goals and 153 points in 178 games. Chosen second overall in the 1995 NHL entry draft, by the New York Islanders, the Hillmond, Saskatchewan native was dealt to the Ottawa Senators where he has developed into one of the best blue-liners in the NHL. A two time gold medal winner as a member of Canada's World Junior Team, Redden helped Canada capture the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. In 750 career NHL games, he has 95 goals and 371 points.

Ryan Craig ? the Craiger
One of three players to be chosen by the Wheat Kings in the second round of the 1997 WHL bantam draft, Ryan Craig spent five seasons in Brandon, playing a total of 302 games, scoring 137 goals and 268 points. Chosen by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 8th round of the 2002 entry draft, Craiger has been a valuable member of the NHL club for the past two seasons. In 113 games with the Lightning, he has 28 goals and 54 points. The Wheat Kings' Top 40 Players of all time were determined by fan voting on the WHL club's official web site, located at www.wheatkings.com

Rounding out the top ten were right-winger Jordin Tootoo of the NHL's Nashville Predators, former Winnipeg Jet Bill Derlago, Winkler's Eric Fehr, Marty Murray, current Atlanta Thrasher assistant coach Brad McCrimmon, Capitals' head coach Glen Hanlon and WHL goal scoring record holder Ray Ferraro. A former member of the Portland Winter Hawks, Ferraro holds the League's Single Season goal scoring record of 108 goals, set during the 1983-84 campaign. Hanlon meanwhile holds the franchise record for most games and minutes played by a Brandon goalkeeper.
