Every year on the 4th of July, America's day of independence, the Boston Pops Orchestra holds a concert on the banks of Charles River in Boston, attracting as many as half a million spectators, from all over the United States and the rest of the world! Amidst the best fireworks in the whole country, the Orchestra plays popular as well as light classical music. This is perhaps the only Orchestra which has successfully played a mixture of popular music and light classical music for well over 100 years now! The Pops have also successfully introduced and popularized classical music in the working classes of America! Their Independence Day concert on the Charles River is known as the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra concert and is simply the best!

The Boston Pops Orchestra is an arm of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), the best in the United States and certainly one of the best orchestra's in the world! It is also part of the prestigious "Big Five" group, which represents original 5 orchestras of the United States. And while the BSO largely played to the Upper classes of the Eastern United States, the Boston Pops Orchestra was created as a branch to play more popular music, along with light classical music, both for the upper and working classes. No wonder then the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestratickets attracts all the Americans!

The Pops were formed four years after the formation of the BSO in 1881. The Orchestra's formation was dream come true for Henry Lee Higginson, creator of the BSO. Higginson wanted to present music "concerts of a lighter kind of music" to the Americans. Initially, the musicians of the BSO also played for the Pops although they were not tier-1 musicians of the BSO. The Pops played, and still play when the BSO is off, especially during the Christmas season and the spring season. In this way, the BSO became the first American Orchestra to play throughout the year. It also provided the musicians with year-round employment. The Pops annual Esplanade concert has become their trademark event.

If Higginson made the Pops, it was none other than Arthur Fieldler, their first music director and conductor, who would later become known as the spirit behind Pops success. Fieldler remained with the Pops for half-century and made the Orchestra what it is today; super-successful and enormously loved group of musicians! However, Fiedler was not always there from the very beginning. He took on the Pops in 1930, and the Esplanade concert was his idea as well. For Fielder music could not be divided into classes and he was unhappy with the fact that classical music had become accessible only to the affluent. Esplanade, Fiedler's brainchild, was a series of free concerts, making music accessible to the wider American audience. With this, the age of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra had arrived!

However, even when the concerts became a commercial activity, the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra tickets always sold out like hot cakes! It was the magic of Fielder that he not only transformed classical music into the music of the people but also made it a commercially lucrative activity. Under his guidance, the Pops sold cassettes, tapes, singles, and albums worth well over $50 million. The Pops became the highest selling Orchestra in the world. He made the Pops stand on such sound ground that his successors had no problem in carrying on with his legacy.

The Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra concert after Fiedler was taken over by John Williams of Indiana Jones and Star Wars fame. He added to the Pops repertoire with his world-famous film scores. Williams is now the Laureate Conductor of the Pops and Keith Lockhart is the new conductor and music director. Under Lockhart-Williams team, the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra concert has only grown in leaps and bounds! So to enjoy the light classical music along with popular music at its very best, buy your Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra tickets now!
