The area can be seen chock-full of the visitors on Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday when it holds the farmers' market, but ask any theater enthusiast of the city about Union Square"s major attraction, one name he will surely utter is the Union Square Theatre.
Located between East 14th and East 17th Streets on the Union Square, Union Square Theatre is a historic live events venue that host regular performances of performing arts including drama, music and dance. Being an off-Broadway theater, it showcases great theatrical gems from different theater companies all year long and also provides quality service for its patrons.
The Union Square Theatre is located in the center of the Union Place Hotel on the south side of Union Square. It has a long history filled with many highs and lows. The historic theater was built in 1871.
Its owner was Sheridan Shook while HM Simons was the architect of this magnificent vaudeville house. In its debut year, Union Square Theatre mostly used to host burlesque acts while only a few plays were staged there during those times.
After one year of its operation, administration of the Union Square Theatre changed and new owner A. M. Palmer decides to turn the venue into a full-fledge drama house.
This resulted in the birth of Union Square Theatre Stock Company that showcased its presentation on the theater"s stage from 1872 to 1883. Only the first year went a bit slow for them, but rising profits in the coming years made the theater and company a hot-favorite among theatergoers.
During these years, Union Square Theatre showcased many romantic plays, mostly of French origin. These include Sardou's Agnes, The Two Orphans and Clara Morris in Camille. Soon, Palmar"s company started to move on to other places as well. After ten years of successful stint, it showcased its last play here in 1883.
The Union Square Theatre Stock Company disbanded in 1885 leaving theatre dead and empty. The final blow came in 1888 when it was burned by fire. Many termed it the end of Union Square Theater"s glory. However, it got another life when it was rebuilt. Showcasing films and comedy this time around, it did not mange to garner the same attention as before and eventually demolished in 1936.
At one time, the whole Union Square has lost its dramatic appeal as its major theater venues began to demolish. Union Square Theatre was no exception. However, when the area was revived again as a hub of off-Broadway production, it witnessed the coming of a new Union Square Theatre. This time, a changed location and better layout make it the darling of the new generation theater enthusiasts.
The Union Square Theatre today symbolizes the changing patterns of American theater houses. Being an intimate venue with old-world style, it becomes a stopping point of many off-Broadway plays that ranges from drama and comedy to musical and history.
In the upcoming season, Union Square Theatre is aspiring to present many great productions and bring good talent to its stage. Visit this well-facilitated theater near the Union Square Park and you will love to explore the historic appeal of New York theaters.
