Ever since its opening on August 16, 1987, Sun Life Stadium has been a witness to a number of memorable moments in the sporting history.
Sun Life Stadium came into existence mainly because Miami Dolphins needed a state of the art facility to play their home games. So in order to provide his team with that, founder of the team Joe Robbie, led a campaign to attain a new home field for Miami Dolphins. Prior to the creation of Sun Life Stadium, Dolphins played their home games at the Orange Bowl for past twenty years of their existence. After the incurrence of $115 Million of construction cost, the stadium finally opened its doors as the Joe Robbie Stadium. Back when the stadium opened for the first time, it became the first sporting facility of its kind when it came to the facilities that it offered to the fans. Although at that time there was not Major League Baseball team housed in Southern Florida, but the kind of facility that was being built in the city, Robbie knew that soon a major league baseball franchise would move into the city as well. So the facility was constructed while keeping that in mind as well.
It was on August 16, 1987 when the stadium finally opened its gates, and on October 11, 1987 first regular season NFL game was played on its field. In that game, Miami Dolphins went up against Kansas City Chiefs in an epic battle which rendered Dolphins coming out victorious with an incredible finishing record of 42-0. Ever since then, the stadium has been hosting notable NFL match ups apart from the regular season fixtures. Over the span of time the stadium has hosted Super Bowl, playoff games, AFC Championship Game and many more.
Later in early 1990s, Robbie's prediction was materialized when a campaign to gain a MLB expansion franchise for the city was started off. After the tough effort, the city was finally awarded an expansion franchise named Florida Marlins, which played its first home game at the Sun Life Stadium on April 5, 1993. Apart from the sporting extravaganzas, Sun Life Stadium has played host to a number of musicians and still continues to do so.
