The Empire was designed by Frank Matcham, a renowned Theatre architect, while it was built for impresario Oswald Stoll. The first ever music event hosted at the Empire was a concert by the Fred Karno Troupe.

Ever since it"s opening, the Empire staged some of the finest of the music industry of that era, however later in 50s, the music industry went through downward spiral and hence the Empire was sold off to BBC in 1953, which turned it into a Television Theatre.

During the ownership of BBC, Empire was site for the programs such as Hancock"s Half Hour, Basil Bush Show, Crackerjack, That"s Life!, This is Your Life, Jim"ll Fix it, The Old Grey Whistle Test, The Generation Game and several others.

BBC remained the owner of the Empire until 1991, and once again the venue was called Shepherds Bush Empire in 1994.

1994 marked the beginning of a new era for the Bush Empire. Ever since then, it has been home to the live performances by the likes of Iron Maiden, Stroke Machine, D-A-D, Kaiser Chiefs, Immortal Technique, The Wildhearts, Son of Dork, Kylie Minogue, Radiohead and many others.
