Ryan Field
Located in Evanston, Illinois, Ryan Field is the hub of sports related activities in the region. The magnificent stadium serves as a home to the football team of Northwestern University Wildcats.
With a capacity of 47,130 approximately, the play field attracts huge crowd during all the Wildcats games and other events as well.
The stadium was first opened in 1926 as Dyche Stadium. It was named after the former vice president and business manager of the University, William A. Dyche, who later directed to increase the seating capacity of the stadium. This was achieved in 1949 when the stadium was extended towards the south end with the addition of a horseshoe enclosure.
Throughout the 1940"s and 1950"s, Dyche Stadium served as the premier sports venue of the region. An estimated 40,000 used to attend Wildcat home games on regular basis.
This continued for years until the dire need for the renovation of the stadium arouse. From 1973 to 1996, the stadium"s used to have an artificial turf. However, with a massive renovation in 1997, it was changed to natural grass.
The 1997 renovation cost $20 million to equip the stadium with state-of-the-art facilities. Beside the turf, seating was also changed. A new stadium club, football locker room, sports medicine and equipment rooms were also constructed during this phase. Playing surface was also lowered in order to improve sight lines from the lowest rows of the grandstands.
When the stadium opened again in the fall of 1997, it did not only get the new impressive look but a new name as well. Named as Ryan Field, the stadium honored Patrick G. Ryan family who donated a huge amount, $8 million to be more exact, during University"s campaign for Athletic Excellence.
Today, the Ryan Field acts as the center of sporting madness in Evanston. The stadium is loved by the residents of the city not only because of its good facilities, but also because of the thrilling environment everyone creates here. Be it any match of Wildcats, you can find thousands of their loyal fans flocking here in with purple and white; the Wildcats colors.
They clap, scream, cry, dance and cheer their team in every way possible. Even if you are not one of the hardcore fans of Northwestern University Wildcats football team, you will still like the energy filled atmosphere at the Ryan Stadium.
Ryan Field is owned and operated by Northwestern University. Technically, the stadium is as sound as many others Big 10 stadiums. It is well-designed as par modern stadiums and can accommodate different games and seasons.
The service within the stadium is quite wonderful. Food is decent, ushers are helpful, seats are comfortable and the view is spectacular. There are concession stands at almost every corner, so you feel really lucky.
