Rogers Centre is a multi-purpose stadium that opened on 5th June, 1989, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Centre hosts a variety of events including concerts, conventions, trade fairs, and plenty of sporting events, such as, baseball, football, etc. Over 2,000 events have been staged and more than 50 million people have visited Rogers Centre since its opening. The stadium comprises movable lower stands on rollers and an Astroturf field that rolls up, making it easier for the conversion from baseball to football. Home to the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team and the Canadian Football League Argonauts team, the indoor/outdoor venue is a great place to watch an event.
Formerly known as SkyDome, the Rogers Centre construction started in April 1986. It was designed by Rod Robbie & Michael Allen and constructed by the EllisDon Construction of London, Ontario. Three years later, after the completion of the stadium's construction in 1989, Blue Jays played their first game on the ground of the stadiums. Rogers Centre approximately cost $600 million to build, financed by government and private industry. The stadium was renamed Rogers Centre following the purchase of the stadium by Rogers Communications in 2005. Despite of taking advantage of the retractable roof which would allow the use of natural grass on the field, the Centre has always used artificial turf, as first it used Astroturf, and then switching to FieldTurf since 2005.
Rogers Centre is famous largely for being the first stadium to have a fully-retractable motorized roof, and it takes only 20 minutes in opening and closing of the roof, as well as for the 348-room hotel attached to it, with 70 rooms overlooking the field. With the roof open, 100% of the field and 91% of the seating area is exposed. The Centre also features four restaurants, including a Hard Rock Café that is the home of the largest electric guitar in North America. It is also the most recent North American major-league stadium built to accommodate both football as well as baseball. Also in centerfield is a 110 ft. wide by 33 ft. high JumboTRON video board. The pitcher's mound is raised and lowered hydraulically, when the field is not in the baseball mode. In addition a new main video/scoreboard was installed along with the addition of video/scoreboards as part of the outfield fence. Since its opening in 1989, the Blue Jays have set attendance records by drawing 4 million fans a year during the early 1990's. The Blue Jays have also had success at the Rogers Centre, winning the 1992 and 1993 World Series.
The venue which contains 143,000 square feet of exhibition space, allows itself to host a variety of events year-round. The Rogers Centre is home to several annual auto shows, with the Canadian International AutoShow in February and Importfest in October. Travelling shows like World Wrestling Entertainment, Disney on Ice, Monster Jam and circuses also have used the venue. The Opening Ceremonies of the XVI International AIDS Conference were also held at Rogers Centre on August 13, 2006. The venue has also hosted many public speakers, including appearances by the Dalai Lama, Christian Evangelist Billy Graham, Nelson Mandela, and J. K. Rowling, for a book reading.
Now, this most expensive building so far, is going to be hosting another amazing line-up of upcoming events which include Ama-Supercross, Coldplay, Disney on Ice: Worlds of Fantasy, International-Bowl, and much more! Make sure to book your Rogers Centre Tickets soon!
