Details of Rio Theatre and the Ticket Luck value
Rio Theatre
Rio Grande Theatre was opened on Main Street in July 29, 1926 with a silent film called Mare Nostrum. Rio Grande was built on the Hacker Hotel by Carroll Thomas Seale and his partner, B.G. Dyne.
It is one of the oldest theatres in the state and the last surviving two-storey adobe theatre in the country. Rio Grande Theatre has kept a vigil in the heart of the city as the downtown area built up, endured urbanization and nearly died.
Today Rio Grande is the center of a revival effort by City Planners and Private investors. Across from where St. Genevieve’s Catholic Church stood before its destruction, the theater survived.
Within the confines of its walls, the Venue received joy, laughter, anguish, tears, despairs, hoped and dreams of four generations of Las Cruscens. Those sentiments were elicited by the dramas, comedies, westerns, action and adventure flicks and newsreels shown on its single screen.
In 1933, the Venue burned, but was rebuilt and restored. Various newspapers described the decorations as ‘color combinations of reds, yellows, and blues’.The theatre remained in operation for several years.
It was closed in 1997 after becoming economically viable. People feared it would be destroyed or put to some other use. Recognizing an incredible opportunity in it, the Dona Ana Arts Council launched a campaign to save the theatre. In a short span of time, they managed to raise the money to purchase the theatre and to restore it.
One day Heather Pollard, who was then Doña Ana Arts Council executive director, received a phone call from two sisters asking, ‘What would you do if we gave the council the Rio Grande Theatre?’ That pone call altered Pollard’s life as resigned from her services with the council.
Remembering that time, Pollard says ‘Her organization feels that the Rio Grande Theatre is the jewel in the crown of the downtown renovation’. So she devoted her full attention to the theatre renovation. She together with State Sen.
Mary Kay Papen launched several fund raising campaigns over a three-year period and raised more than $1 million to buy the remaining interest in the building.
The today’s Rio Grande Theatre took just two years to perform a demolition of the building, removing the layers of stucco, paint, fabric and asbestos insulation to take the two-storey adobe down to its original character.
While telling to the media about reconstruction of the Site, Bassford said that they knew it would have enormous surprises for them but the reality was just phenomenal.
The building told them things that they didn’t know earlier. After raising money to purchase the building, the Council also had to struggle hard to fund the renovation.
The restoration process began in 2001 and was completed sufficiently by 2005. When the new front of the theatre was removed, the original decorations were recovered. The old style painted scenery was replaced; the stage was hung and decorated in a lavish manner with velvet drapes and curtains.
Together it looks like as is the Auditorium proper. The Theatre is lovely inside; the foyer and aisles are carpeted in a rich red. The lightening is as modern as has yet been installed in even the larger theatres in the cities.
A washed Air Cooling system maintains any desired temperature with its clean pure air. This air is distributed throughout the house.
The mammoth organ is operated by Miss Elsie Dean Bristol who has come direct from one of the corporation’s Denver theatres. The organ assures all lovers of accurately played pictures a treat in store for them.
After its grand opening in 2007, the historic Rio Grande Theatre was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Patrons often call the Site a centerpiece of downtown Las Cruces revitalization.
The public was invited to the DAAC-sponsored The Rio Grande Theatre- Renovation Celebration. The main purpose was to celebrate the rebirth of a Historic Venue. People experienced the ultimate fun and entertainment in this 3-day event.
The grand opening celebrations included free live performances and a black-tie fundraising dinner. Local schoolchildren were treated to tours of the theater and live performances on Youth Day. In the evening, school parents and other adults got their turn by watching their students on the stage.
The city of Las Cruces is now the actual building owner, in order to act as a fiscal agent for public funds, and has an agreement with the council. Also, after many false starts Amy Johnson Bassford was named DAAC executive director.
