Pacific Coliseum
Pacific Coliseum - completed in 1968 - is an extraordinary indoor arena situated at 100 North Renfrew Street in Vancouver, British Columbia, and has a seating capacity for around 16,281 for ice hockey. Presently, the Coliseum is the home of the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League. Apart from sports, the arena also arranges a range of different events and concerts. It has also been chosen as the venue for figure skating and short track speed skating in the 2010 Winter Olympics.
On September 8, the Coliseum hosted Game 4 of the 1972 Summit Series, with the U.S.S.R. beating Canada 5-3. In an interview conducted after the game which gained immense popularity, Phil Esposito gave a poignant reply to the hooting of the crowd that was televised on national television. The Pacific Colisieum also played host to the 2006 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships and the 1977 NHL All-Star Game.
The 1982 and 1994 Stanley Cup Finals featured games at the Coliseum. On May 16, 1982, the New York Islanders beat the Canucks 3-1 and were awarded the Stanley Cup on Coliseum ice. On June 11, 1994, the New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks met at the Coliseum in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Jeff Brown and Geoff Courtnall each scored twice as the Canucks won the game 4-1 to even the series at three games apiece. However, they lost the series to New York by a 3-2 score in Game 7. Canucks owner Arthur Griffiths called it "the greatest game ever played at Pacific Coliseum."
Interestingly, this venue has also been utilized for the Madison Square Garden scene in the movie Miracle.
The Pacific Coliseum is the prevalent structure within the Hastings Park complex which presents an outstanding situation for events as sundry and exciting as ice shows, boxing, basketball, hockey, concerts, circuses, large assemblies, and trade & consumer shows.
The Pacific Coliseum provides an accommodation for nearly 15,713 in permanent seating, with stipulation for 2,000 temporary seats on the floor for concerts and spectator sports. Incase of greater level trade shows, the building facilitates 80,000 gross square feet of exhibition area on the floor and 47,000 gross square feet on the concourse area, with a 14-foot wide ramp linking the two levels. Ceiling clearance from the floor is a sweeping 68 feet. Dressing rooms, office space, press working areas, exhibitors lounge and full ticket services are accessible within the building. For sport events and other public functions and ceremonies in the Pacific Coliseum, the accommodation facilities arena vary from 4,200 in mini concert stage to 17,000 in the round full concert or sports seating.
