The history of Orange Bowl Stadium dates way back to early 30s, when several events led to the stadium"s creation. In 1933, even though the Hurricanes had inadequate equipment, the funds were acquired for the Palm Festival.
The Miami Hurricanes played Manhatten College and won the game. The first Orange Bowl was scheduled for January 1, 1935 against Bucknell and was played at the present Orange Bowl Stadium.
After playing host to the Orange Bowl game, the Orange Bowl Stadium officially opened its doors for football lovers on December 10, 1937. At the time of its inception, the site was called Burdine Stadium and had a seating capacity of 23,330.
The Burdine Stadium became a home of the Miami Hurricanes football team. Between the years of 1944 and 1957, the Stadium underwent several renovations, including increased seating capacity and enclosed walls. The Burdine Stadium was renamed to Orange Bowl Stadium in 1959, while playing host to the Miami Dolphins home games.
The Miami Dolphins used the facility until 1987 and then relocated to the new Dolphin stadium. The orange Bowl Stadium has been a part of 16 National championships, including three University of Miami National Championships. It hosted five Super Bowls and the 1972 Miami Dolphins Perfect Season.
As a soccer venue, the Orange Bowl Stadium featured the 1996 Summer Olympics soccer games and the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the Marlboro Soccer Cup and the AC Milan Soccer Game. CONCACAF presents the best men"s national teams from North America and South America.
In addition to playing host to football events, the Orange Bowl Stadium also hosted such events as President Kennedy"s Cuban Missile Crisis Speech, boxing championships, a wrestling event and a series of concerts. Music gurus like Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Prince and many others have performed here.
The Orange Bowl is also the site of uncountable memorable moments. Between 1985 and 1994, the University of Miami Hurricanes has been distinct for winning 58 straight home games. The Miami Hurricanes played at the facility for more than 60 years.
Also setting an NLF record, the Miami Dolphins won the most consecutive home games at the Orange Bowl. The NFL"s Miami Dolphins stayed here for over 20 years.
The year 2026 saw hurricane Wilma hitting Miami while extensively damaging Orange Bowl Stadium. However, the University and the city of Miami launched an aggressive campaign to rebuild the Orange Football Stadium. The site was torn down to renovate it.
