The NY State Fair, known also as the Great New York State Fair, is organized at the Empire Expo Center at Geddes in New York. It has been active for more than one hundred and sixty five years. In 2001 alone, the fair attracted more than one million and eleven thousand people. It is a twelve day long exhibition of agriculture, education, technology and entertainment, complete in the traditional style of state fairs but also combining modern aspects found in most modern festivals. It features much loved midway rides, exhibits, concessionaires and concerts. It is the largest annual event in the state of New York and is part of a tradition for the many families in New York.
The NY State Fair, known also as the Great New York State Fair, was first held at Syracuse in 1841, and then at several other venues until it was permanently situated at Syracuse in 1890. It is the third largest state fair in the US, after the Minnesota State Fair and the Texas State Fair. This twelve day long event is held at the three hundred and seventy five acre large Empire Expo Center in the town of Geddes at the western end of Syracuse.
The fair has its beginnings in the New York State Agricultural Society, which was found in Albany in 1832, to promote agriculture. The first ever fair, held in 1841, attracted nearly fifteen thousand people who saw animal exhibits, participated in plowing contests, listened to speeches and got samples of goods for their homes and farms. By its second year, the fair had grown exponentially, travelling amongst eleven different cities from 1842 to 1889. It was held at Albany, Buffalo, Auburn, Elmira, Poughkeepsie, New York City, Rochester, Syracuse, Saratoga Springs, Watertown, and Utica.
The fair’s permanent home was established on a piece of land, one hundred acres large, donated by the Syracuse Land Co to the Agricultural Society. The society constructed permanent buildings on the site but was burdened by debt, turning to the state government, who bought the site and then began managing the fair from 1899. The government began building larger structures, adding new buildings and sites by year, such as the Center of Progress Building, the Science & Industry Building, the Coliseum and many more.
In 1972, the fair played host to iconic artists Sonny and Cher and in 1990, it switched to a twelve day format that continues to date. In 2008, the fair added the Pride of New York Marketplace to showcase agricultural products made in New York. In 2009, the fair switched to a format that allowed two artists and bands to perform each day, and played host to rock band Shinedown to a live audience of fifteen thousand plus. In 2010, the fair played host to country band Lady Antebellum, a concert that attracted more than thirty thousand attendees, a concert many saw with NY State Fair tickets.
