The historic Strathmore Mansion also featured small chamber performances and art exhibitions in 1983, developed its plans for the Music Center over 20 years ago. In 1985, Strathmore’s Board of Directors and President and CEO Eliot Pfanstiehl instigated planning about the necessitation for a larger educational and performance space. in 1996 i.e., just about 11 years later, , the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, under the management of ex-president John Gidwitz, articulated his interest in building a second home in Montgomery County, and joined Strathmore as a pioneer in the creation for the Music Center at Strathmore. Duncan and Maryland Governor Parris N. Glendening.
in 1998, the dream became a reality when, the Montgomery County Council and the Maryland State Legislature accepted matching capital support which comprised of $48 million each for the Music Center at Strathmore. In 2001, i.e., after the design team was selected, work began under the supervision of the county.
The public-private association among Strathmore Hall Foundation, Inc., assume the everyday administration and artistic programming of the Music Center and Mansion, together with the support of the community, its elected leaders at the State and County levels created one of the most momentous buildings in Montgomery County. furthermore hundreds of charitable individual and corporate donors showed willingness to help build, provide and sustain the operation of the Music Center, with $1 million donors Comcast, Discovery Communications, Inc., The Gazette / The Washington Post / Post Newsweek Media / Philip L. Graham Fund, J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation and Lockheed Martin.
With the formation of the Music Center at Strathmore, Montgomery County has highlighted the quality of the local arts community and ascertained that upcoming generations of area populace will grow up with the delight of astonishing music, dance, theater and art in their lives.
