The Murat Centre which was named after the Frenchman Joachim Murat, who was one of the generals in Egyptian campaign and the brother-in-law of Napoleon Bonaparte, is an entertainment venue in Indianapolis, Indiana.

It was formally known as Murat Temple owned by the Murat Shriners opened on February 28, 1910. It is the oldest still standing stage house in downtown Indianapolis and is the only Shrine temple in the world with a French-originating name. It has also won the claim of being the largest Shrine temple in North America.

The Murat Centre is mostly known by the people of Indianapolis for its theatre, which was built in 1910. In the early days of it existence the venue featured Broadway plays. A 1932 speech by Winston Churchill was also conducted in this venue.

Between the years 1948 and 1963 it has the privilege of being the only road show venue. In 1922 an addition was made to the Murat center, due to the increased interest in live performances.

This new section nearly doubled the size of the Murat Center with the grand addition of the Egyptian Room. Which is now popular amongst it"s patrons as Murat Egyptian Room. This additional Egyptian-themed auditorium was already planned before the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb, which coincided with the opening of this auditorium.

The construction of Murat Center was accomplished through studies of Arabian and Egyptian architecture as the building is themed after the Islamic temples, found in Middle-East and Egypt.

The landmark was created resulting in enormous towers or minarets, terra cotta trim, copper roofing, patterned brick work in brown and yellow colour and stained glass windows set within arched openings of varying design. There is a 208 feet tall minaret at the southeast corner of the building.

The additional Egyptian Room was built considering the same theme to blend with the existing structure and was completed with colorful columns of hieroglyphics and massive chandeliers adorned with glowing busts of the Egyptian King Tut.

Under the 1995 renovation the building underwent a face lift to replace and increase theatre seating, parking, restroom, refreshment and handicap seating facilities, enhancing the caliber of the stage and sound production with state-of-the-art lights and sound.

But the history of the venue as considered during its construction was preserved and the historic fabric was maintained, chairs, sconces, columns, and stained glass windows were untouched.

The largest hosting area in Murat Center is the Egyptian Room, which can hold 2000 people for a standing cocktail reception though for some it seems to be a large narrow room which is reminiscent of a high school gymnasium.

It has played host to bands like Powerman 5000, Gwar, Anthrax, Fear Factory, Insane Clown Posse and many more. The Murat Egyptian Room is set up comfortably with good acoustics and strong sightlines throughout the whole venue.

It provides the entertainment to people of all ages hosting musicians and musical guests from all genres. There is a bar with in its vicinity for patrons over 21 years of age but for the purpose one needs to get a wristband from one of the security guards.

To reach the venue one should take route of I-65 to exit 111 which is a Market Street. The venue building is on the corner of New Jersey and Michigan. The premier parking is available at all points at purchase of $15. While the Murat Centre parking lot is also available at first come, first serve basis.

The venue is open from Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. On Saturdays it opens at 10:00 a.m. and closes on 2:00 p.m.

On show days the Box Office opens approximately two hours prior to show time and remains open until 30 minutes after the scheduled performance time. Murat Egyptian Room is one of the popular venues amongst the people of all ages.
