Middle East
A monolith in the shifting sands of the Boston rock scene, the Middle East Restaurant and Nightclub first opened its doors in 1970.

It presently consists of three live-music performance rooms, two family-style restaurants with full-service bars, and an elegant restaurant named ZuZu.

ZuZu leans a bit upscale in direction with their fine cuisine that is presented in a tres-chic environment. As per the name, you can expect good Middle Eastern food to be had here.

The history of the Middle East Restaurant and Nightclub dates back to 1970 when it opened its doors as a family-owned and operated Lebanese eatery.

Around this time, ethnic restaurants of all kinds were sprouting up all over Cambridge. Both residents and out-of-towners were at once attracted to the Middle East and won over by the restaurant"s unique, eclectic ambience, the constant presence of and hospitality of the Sater family, and the authentic home cooking.

Today, the Middle East Restaurant and Nightclub is also noted for featuring live performances. It houses a "Bakery" where you can find bellydancing and acoustic music.

The restaurant"s "Upstairs" comprises of an intimate, but edgy rock club, while the "Downstairs" makes larger acts do their thing. Several of the rooms also serve as art galleries, and offer a fresh showcase for local and international artists on a monthly basis.

The year 1975 saw the restaurant acquiring a storefront next door while connecting the two rooms to create what is now called the Upstairs.

Later that year, live music at the Middle East was born that provided customers ample opportunity to enjoy belly dancing, jazz, latin, and funk after dinner. Music at the facility took a serious turn when rock impresarios began renting the 200-capacity "Upstairs" to host top artists and their talent.

This innovation proved to be so successful that it forced the dining room into its present Massachusetts Avenue address. The year 1988 saw significant additions into the facility.

At the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue, a Bakery was added, while the Brookline Street became The Corner. The Corner is a 70-person-capacity restaurant and bar with a small corner stage.

The Mid East Restaurant and Nightclub once featured a bowling alley in its basement. However, it was later converted into the "Downstairs". Downstairs is now a 550-capacity music venue that features world-class musical performers.

The year 2001 witnessed the Middle East adding an elegant restaurant named ZuZu to the complex. In the October of the following year, Lilli Dennison added her own personal touch to the venue.

That included a sophisticated club decor, a hip hangout menu, and live music several nights a week. Middle East is currently featuring a spectacular array of not-to-miss events; the most notable are Dead Man, Mae, and Maserati.
