Metro
A famous concert hall located on Clark Street in Chicago, IL, is the creation of music and art lover Joe Shanahan, whose love for music and parties led to the establishment of the smart bar/Metro.

Shanahan visited New York City during 70"s and after observing art and music scene there, he desperately urged for such art and music center in Chicago as well after he returned to his hometown.

Initially his apartment became the venue of his private parties that he threw to his friends, but sooner than later, these parties started attracting a huge flock of party goers that out spaced his apartment.

Following that, Shanahan began his search for a new place where he can host his parties. During that Shanahan came across a North side Auditorium Building that was built in 1927 and served as a Swedish Community Center.

He opened his Smart Bar at the forth floor of that building in 1982. This dance bar initially featured DJ"s like Frankie Knuckles and Joe Smooth on regular basis.

The first major commercial event held at the dance bar was a live concert by the band R.E.M. that was followed by the first ever promotion of any show held at the bar. The result rather came out to be unexpected, as this came out to be a huge success.

Ever since its first commercial success in 1982, bar"s owner Shanahan started booking the venue on weekends. Following the success as a concert hall, Shanahan took over the entire building and moved Smart bar from 4th floor down to the basement and after the transformation was accomplished the bar re-opened with the name of The Cabaret Metro.

In the beginning the bar hosted concerts by local musicians and bands; some of the early performances by local bands included the performances by Big Black and Naked Raygun.

As its fame kept on growing Metro became the site for performances by the bands like R.E.M, Ramones, Pylon, The Replacements, Sonic Youth, Husker Du, X, The Bangles, Soul Asylum, and the Butthole Surfers, which were based outside Chicago.

Metro has been the venue for early performances by some of the famous bands of the present day, like Killing Joke, Depeche Mode, and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Liz Phair, Veruca Salt, Jane"s Addiction, Mudhoney, Sound garden and legendary Nirvana.

Present day hit musicians and bands including Kanye West, Fall Out Boy, The killers, Haste the Day, Fatboy Slim, Jimmy Eat World, No Doubt, The White Stripes, Atmosphere, Kill Hannah, Alkaline Trio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, The Frames, Disturbed and many others also performed their early gigs in front of the metro crowds.

July 22, 2007 marked the 25th Anniversary of the Metro that was celebrated at Millennium Park"s Pritkzer Pavilion. The Decembrists along with the Grant Park Orchestra, performed at the occasion.
