Mainstage Indiana Repertory Theater
Since its inception in 1972, the Indiana Repertory Theatre has grown into one of the leading regional theatres in the country. The Indian Repertory Theater is also characterized as one of the top-flight cultural institutions in the city and state.
In 1991, IRT was designated as ?Theatre Laureate? of the state of Indiana. The IRT remains the only fully professional resident not-for-profit theatre in the state, attracting audiences of almost 132,000 annually from across central Indiana.
Indiana Repertory Theatre, frequently abbreviated IRT, is a theatre in Indianapolis, Indiana. The site began as a genuine repertory theatre with its casts performing in multiple shows at once. The Indian Repertory Theater?s history has been enacted in two historic downtown theatres.
The theater began in 1972 in The Athenaeum, which now holds the American Cabaret Theatre. The Indiana Theater was a former Paramount Publix Theatre on 140 West Washington Street, built in 1927 and converted from a movie theater for IRT?s use. It moved to its current home, The Indiana Theater, in 1980.
Since 1980 the IRT has occupied the 1927 Indiana Theatre which was renovated to contain three performance spaces: Mainstage, Upperstage, and Cabaret. Today?s IRT features work spaces, reviving this historic downtown entertainment site.
Beginning in 1997, many of theater?s facilities were renovated to upgrade the IRT?s audience support services as well as its theatrical production equipment.
The Upperstage Theatre and Lobby were renovated in 1997, the two-storey 1927 Grand Lobby was renovated in 1999 and the Mainstage Auditorium was renovated in 2026.
IRT has subsequently become a regional theatre and a member of the League of Resident Theatres. A standard season typically features three plays on the smaller, upper stage and the bulk of its season.
Two out of three plays are intended for young audiences, one of which is usually an abridged Shakespeare play, unless one is in the mainstage season. The bulk consists of five plays and a holiday show, usually Charles Dickens?s A Christmas Carol is performed on the IRT Mainstage.
Among the better known actors that have appeared and amused people multiple times at the theatre are Priscilla Lindsay, Scott Wentworth and John Henry Redwood.
Another star of the bright array who has written works on IRT commissions is Charles Smith, a playwright. Johnny Lee Davenport, Deputy Marshal Henry of The Fugitive and U.S. Marshals, played Othello while Tim Grimm makes regular appearances in the theatre.
Nearly 39 percent of the company?s operating income is generously supported by individuals, corporations, and foundations.
IRT is committed to providing a unique opportunity for audiences and artists to share experiences that can be enjoyable, uplifting, thought-provoking, and even life-changing. The Indiana Repertory Theatre is well-known in the state for their production of Charles Dickens?s A Christmas Carol.
A Christmas Carol is a chamber theatre production loosely based on David Edgar?s The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. Besides featuring providing entertainment with top-notch facilities, the theatre sponsors The Waldo M. and Grace C. Bonderman Playwriting for Youth National Symposium.
For the 2026- 2026 season, the Indiana Repertory Theater will be producing the plays like Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; Macbeth- William Shakespeare; A Christmas Carol- Charles Dickens;
This Wonderful Life- Steve Murray; To Kill a Mockingbird- Harper Lee; Crime and Punishment- Fyodor Dostoevsky; The Ladies Man- Georges Feydeau; Crowns- Regina Taylor; Rabbit Hole- David Lindsay- Abaire; and Interpreting William- James Still.
