History
The architecture of this theatre was conceived and designed by Herts & Tallant. The famous Daniel Frohman built it and it was inaugurated on November 2, 1903. The first play to be performed was called The Proud Prince.
Design
The theatre is built with the creative Beaux-Arts design, boasting staircases made of marble and marquee. Despite having three levels the theatre is not too big providing seating for only 950 persons.
The theatre has a unique gray façade based on limestone architecture. The lobby has two huge staircases. These marble staircases resemble the marble of Athens.
Originally when the theatre was opened, it featured high-tech ventilation system. This system helped to keep the theatre cool in hot summers whereas warm in winters. The theatre was cooled with air passing on ice chambers and was kept warm with steam coils running.
The famous Frohman had built a residence that provided sight of the actors on the stage. It is known that Frohman"s wife was a legendary actress. He would wave a white handkerchief every time he disliked her performance.
Productions
Many famous productions have taken place since the first performance, The Proud Prince in 1903. Some of the eminent shows include The Admirable Crichton, The Other Girl, Doll"s House and last but not the least The Thief.
Few stars that performed in Lyceum and gained immense recognition include Bette Davis, Judith Anderson, Humphrey Bogart, Fanny Brice, Billie Burke and Leslie Howard. The Lyceum launched its mega hit Born Yesterday which featured Judy Holiday was one of the shows that ran in the theatre for the longest time.
