Lambeau Field, also known as “The Frozen Tundra” is located Green Bay, Wisconsin. It is an outdoor football stadium that was opened on 29th of September 1957 as “City Stadium”. The field is officially the home ground of National Football League’s “Green Bay Packers”. The stadium’s name was changed in 1965 in the memory of the founder and head coach of Green Bay Packers, Curly Lambeau. Lambeau Field is state of Wisconsin’s second biggest stadium.
Lambeau Field’s demand increased than the supply after Vince Lombardi was introduced as the coach. Four years after its opening, the capacity of the ground was increased to 38,669 in 1961. Since then the process of expansion has continued. In 1963, it was extended to 42,327, in 1966 to 50,860 and in 1970 to 56,263. During 1985, 72 new private boxes were constructed and in 1990, 32 more boxes were included. In the same year 1,920 theatre-like seats were also planted in the ring which increased the capacity of 59,543. $4.7 million was invested in 1995 for construction of 20 more private boxes on the north side of the ground, which increased the seating to 60,890.
Lambeau Field went through major renovation during 2003. A grand renovation plan was designed to increase and update the existing facilities. Suite and premium seating were implemented which brought an increase to 73,128 in the seating capacity. Green Bay Packers broke National Football League’s Chicago Bears’ “Wrigley Field” record by completing 51 years with Lambeau Field in 2007. Although the seating capacity kept increasing, the tickets demand remained as hot as ever. The streak of sold out matches brought the Packers games live on the televisions.
Lambeau Field got its nickname, “The Frozen Tundra” after the game that was played between Dallas Cowboys and Packers on 31st of December 1967. The match took place in a temperature -15F. In newspaper, Tex Maule, the journalist, compared the field to “tundra”.
