King Center For The Performing Arts
Maxwell C. King Center nicknamed as King Center is 126,000 square foot facility located at 3865 North Wickham Road Melbourne, Florida.
This is a performing art center which was opened in the spring of the year 1988 with the former name Brevard Performing Arts Center as it is owned by Brevard Community College.
But in the summer of 1989, the Brevard Community College District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to change the name of the facility to the Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts owing to the name of the man behind the making of this center.
The center came in to being through the leadership of Dr. Maxwell C. King, former President of Brevard Community College with his mission statement: "To improve the quality of life for all residents of Brevard County through cultural, educational, recreational and community arts programs, by providing access to high quality, challenging and diverse touring and local performing arts events."
Through the continuous efforts of few vigorous souls Florida State Legislature provided the opening funds for design work for the Center in 1983. Subsequent legislative funding for construction came in 1985 and 1986 and the center was completed at the construction cost of $12.3 million.
The main theater of the King Center has the seating capacity of 2,002 occupants divided as 696 seats on orchestra level, 108 seats in orchestra pit; access for 24 wheel chair seats and the grand tier hold 1,174 occupants while the stage occupies the 6,000 square foot area with 67 foot grid and 27 foot high by 56 foot wide proscenium opening.
The center also holds a 3255 square foot 200-seated black box theatre known as the Studio Theatre. Apart from that, there are two 1,596 and 700 square foot dance studios and three rehearsal halls choral, instrumental and general rehearsals.
There are eight dressing rooms with lavatories and showers and a large green room to serve performers and crew which is equipped with refrigerator, lounge furniture, stage audio and video monitors. There is a lobby used as art display area in the center.
The main theater of the center was closed on June 1, 2005 for a four-month long improvement project. During the renovation the ceiling structure was changed to improve the viewing capabilities for patrons seated in the Grand Tier.
A new concert sound system was installed to integrate advances in sound reinforcement with computer modeling and analysis, resulting in a dazzling audio experience.
These major changes were brought about under the guidance of Executive Director of Kings Center Steve Janicki. $ 1.3 million funds were for the project. The major donation came from Capital Campaign Drive led by the Campaign Leadership Committee of Elena M. Flom, Steven G. Janicki and Philip Nohrr.
Major corporate contributions came from Harris Corporation, Sutton Properties, Northrop Grumman, Stevens Bassett Direct Furniture and Berman, Hopkins, Wright & LaHam, CPA"s, LLP.
Designed as a state-of-the-art, multi-use facility, the theatre offers a diverse collection of programming, including popular artists, Broadway touring shows, classical artists, ballet and contemporary dance, opera, country music artists, family-oriented events and children's theatre.
