Details of Kansas Speedway and the Ticket Luck value
June 2, 2001 - the ARCA RE/MAX Series and the then NASCAR Winston West Series. Frank Kimmel wins the NASCAR event; Jason Jarrett wins the ARCA race. It is strategically located at the intersection of I-435 and I-70 in Kansas City, Kan., about 15 miles west of downtown Kansas City.
Kansas Speedway is a speedway in Kansas City, Kansas, adjacent to the Village West area. The speedway is a 1.5 miles (2.4 km) tri-oval with 15 degree banking in the turns, 10.4 degrees in the front stretch and 5 degrees in the back stretch.
The track pavement width is 55 feet. The speedway is strategically located at the intersection of I-435 and I-70 in Kansas City, Kan., about 15 miles west of downtown Kansas City.
The track held its first race on June 2, 2001, when the Winston West series contested the Kansas 100. The top-level NASCAR Sprint Cup series holds the annual Camping World RV 400 at the track.
Besides the racing, other weekend track events include high-speed driving schools where race fans can learn what it"s like to be Richard Petty or Mario Andretti. Car shows, community functions and private parties make up the rest of Kansas Speedway"s yearlong activity calendar. It is not uncommon to find drivers like Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tony Stewart, Mark Martin, Ryan Newman, Dale Jarrett and Kurt Busch race here.
The colors purple and yellow have taken on a new meaning since they have adorned the bleachers. The track seats nearly 82,000 spectators in the grandstands and another 10,000 or more people watch from the comfort of their motor coaches parked in the track"s massive infield.
The facility has fan friendly access to 65 rows of seating, with a unique ground level concourse that allows spectators to walk down 30 rows (on grade) or up 35 rows (on structure). The Kansas Speedway attracts majority attendance from the neighboring six-state area. The average fan travels about three to six hours to reach Kansas City.
It all began in October 1996 when International Speedway Corporation explored the options to build a speedway facility in the Midwest region of the United States. Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas were selected as the site for the new speedway and Grant Lynch was appointed as president of the Kansas Speedway Corporation project.
The new project was to be financed through bond issues. Ticket sales effort through the sale of the Founding Fan P.A.S.S. (Preferred Access Speedway Seating) was launched in July 1999.
This P.A.A.S. allowed fans to lock-in the best seat locations at the track as well as acquire benefits otherwise not available to the general public. All 32 luxury suites planned for the facility were sold out even before construction completed. Consequently, Director approved funding for an additional 36 suites.
The Midwest Ford Dealers Association, University of Kansas Medical Center, Pepsi-Cola, Price Chopper Supermarkets and Coors Brewing Company were announced as the official marketing partners. The strength of these brands continues to demonstrate the high level of interest the construction of the facility has generated.
On February 9, 2000, Kansas Speedway unveiled the 2000 Ford Taurus as its Official Replica Pace Car. The car, which is adorned with racing stripes, also displayed the number 58 on each of the rear fenders in memory of former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker, Derrick Thomas.
In the same year, NASCAR and Indy Racing League announced that they will bring events to Kansas Speedway for its inaugural racing season in 2001.On May 8, 2001, the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce declared Kansas Speedway as a tourism leader and accordingly presented the track president Grant Lynch with an award.
Kansas Speedway tickets went on-sale to residents of Wyandotte County on August 17, 2000, and on the 21st of the same month, Kansas Speedway tickets went on-sale world-wide via the internet, telephone, fax, US mail and at local Price Choppers.
Construction was completed in spring 2001 and the grand opening was held on June 2, 2001 with two events - the ARCA RE/MAX Series and the then NASCAR Winston West Series. Frank Kimmel won the NASCAR event; Jason Jarrett won the ARCA race.
On September 29, 2001, the first ever NASCAR Winston Cup Series were held at Kansas Speedway. Ryan Newman was second, only .0413 seconds behind. A sold-out crowd watched Jeff Gordon win the series.
The Speedway changed presidency on March 19, 2002. Jeff Boerger was named Kansas Speedway president, replacing Grant Lynch.
