Built on 328 acres of farmland, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in 1909. It is the world's largest spectator facility and the only racetrack to host the Indy Racing League, NASCAR and Formula One.

The Speedway is home of the Indianapolis 500 race. On the grounds of the Speedway is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum, which opened in 1956, and the Brickyard Crossing Golf Resort, which originally opened as the Speedway Golf Course in 1929.

The Speedway was also the venue of the opening ceremonies for the Games. The Speedway completed the Triple Crown of Racing 2000-2007 with the addition of June's United States Grand Prix, which was the only Formula One race run in the United States.

The Speedway's infield road course also hosted the Red Bull Indianapolis GP motorcycle race in 2008. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is located in Speedway, Indiana, in the United States.

It initially opened in 1909 as an automotive testing and competition facility at a time when the burgeoning car industry was thriving in Indiana. The speedway was built as a 2.5-mile rectangle by its four founders, Carl Fisher, James Allison, Frank Wheeler and Arthur Newby, because that was the largest track that could be constructed on the land available.

It has permanent seating capacity for more than 257,000 people and infield seating that raises capacity to an approximate 400,000, thus, it is the largest and highest-capacity sporting facility in history.

When the Speedway"s first series of races, which included motorcycles and many types of cars, caused the track's original crushed stone and tar surface to break up, the Speedway immediately was repaved with 3.2 million bricks.

It has been known as the "Brickyard" ever since. Most of those bricks remain in place today under the Speedway's modern asphalt surface. The track and grounds deteriorated badly during World War II, and plans were made to replace it with residential housing.

But Terre Haute businessman Tony Hulman stepped in and purchased the speedway and began a series of improvements to the facility that continue to this day. Today, Hulman's daughter, Mari Hulman George, is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway"s chairman and her son, Tony Hulman George, is the track president.

The track is unique in its configuration, with straightaways between Turns 1 and 2, as well as Turns 3 and 4. Despite its relative lack of banking, it is the site of some of the highest speeds in motorsports and a legend among race fans and drivers alike the world over.

The NASCAR Winston Cup Series visited the track for the inaugural Brickyard 400 in August 1994, which generated the largest crowd ever to witness a NASCAR event. They all watched Indiana native Jeff Gordon make history as the first Brickyard 400 winner.

Seven-time series champion Dale Earnhardt claimed victory at the second Brickyard 400 in 1995. The 1996 winner was Dale Jarrett, and list of winners just continues.
