The Geffen Playhouse is also referred to as ‘the Geffen’. The Geffen is a non-profit performing arts theater in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The Geffen was originally named the Westwood Playhouse. It was bought by the UCLA in 1993. UCLA's chancellor at that time, Charles E. Young, had hired Gil Cates Producing Director. The theater was renamed after David Geffen donated $5 million. This was the largest philanthropic donation that anyone ever made to an already constructed theater.

The Geffen was originally constructed in 1929. At that time, it was known as the Masonic Affiliates Club, or the MAC. It was built for the students and alumni at UCLA. It was one of the first 12 structures built in Westwood Village, and renowned architect Stiles O. Clements designed it.

The theatre was renamed ‘The Geffen’ when the David Geffen Foundation made a $5-million lead gift towards an eventually $17-million capital campaign to renovate the theater [2002]. When the renovation was complete, The Geffen was reopened [November 16, 2005]. The new look included an entire interior makeover. It now had a 500-seat theater, as well as a new 125-seat Audrey Skirball-Kenis Theater.
