Almost every University in the US has its own arena and the University of Southern California isn't any different. Galen Center is USC's very own arena built just across the street from the university campus. It is operated by the USC and it is home to two teams, USC Volleyball and the USC Trojans basketball teams. The venue also plays host to events like theatrical programs, concerts and various pageants. Galen Center tickets are easily available for any event anyone would like to attend there.
The USC wanted its own on-campus arena since it was formed in 1880 but for one reason or the other the dream could not materialize. Before the Galen Center, the university's basketball team played its games at different venues like the Pan-Pacific Auditorium, the Shrine Auditorium and the Los Angeles Sports Memorial Arena where it had been based since 1959. A lot of effort was made to raise the funds for the construction of the facility but it all came to pass. When USC's quarterback Carson Palmer won the 2002 Heisman Trophy, Louis Galen, a very successful banker and his wife who were Trojan fans, donated ten million dollars to help with the construction. The donation by the Galens increased further when they donated another twenty five million dollars to get the center named after them. Further fifteen million dollars were donated by them to get the adjoining practice facility named after them taking their total donation up to fifty million dollars. The construction of the center officially began on 30th October, 2004 at a ground breaking ceremony that Lou Galen attended along with Los Angeles City Council members Jan Perry and Bernard Parks. The center was completed in 2006 at an estimated cost of one hundred and forty seven million dollars which included the arena itself, the modern training facilities and the team offices.
The USC's women's and men's basketball teams now had their own facilities and shifted from the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena to their brand new Galen Center. The very first event that took place at the arena was a women's basketball game between USC and Stanford University on 12th October, 2006. Men's first basketball game was held at the Galen Center on 16th November against the University of South Carolina whereas the first game that was a complete sell out was played between USC and UCLA Bruins. Al Green has the honor of being the first man to have a concert here and he has been followed by other notable performers to stage their events at the arena. The Center's basketball court is called the "Jim Skertel Court" which is named after a former player who played for the Trojans for two years way back in the 1950's.
