Ford Theatre Tickets & Upcoming Events
Founded in August 1863, Ford's Theater is a historic venue in Washington D.C that has now become a popular spot for the tourists and local residents. Formed by John T. Ford, the theater made its grand opening by staging a sold-out performance of The Naiad Queen. Ford hired full-time talented crew for the theater to deliver a captivating performance to the audience. Since its inception, the theater has garnered tremendous commercial success due to the brilliant actors and musicians onboard. Abraham Lincoln has also attended eight performances at the theater including The Marble Heart which starred John Wilkes Booth.
Unfortunately, Lincoln was also murdered at the same theater in the spring of 1865 when he was watching the performance of Our American Cousin with his wife and a few other guests. After his assassination, soldiers were stationed all around the venue to help avoid any unforeseen situation in future. Shortly afterwards, the theater was taken over by the government on a monthly lease and converted into a three story building for official use. Â
After a single lease year, the government purchased the structure in 1866 by paying $88,000 as a full and final settlement to Ford. In 1893, a part of the structure collapsed in the process killing twenty-two government employees and injuring sixty five people in the building. The investigation on the matter revealed that it was the negligence of the building contractor that caused the collapse of the building. After this incident, the Ford's was shut down and the government operations were stopped.
Between 1931 and 1933, the Department of Interior took over the building and turned it into The Lincoln Museum which was open to the public. In January 1968, the Ford's theater reopened as a working theater and a national historic site. For the first time after 1968, the theater was closed for its renovation in 2007. During the eighteen months of renewal, the museum's lighting, sound, heating and air-conditioning systems were upgraded. In 2009, the Ford's Theater Museum opened to the public with broad comfortable seats, amazing acoustics and brilliant lighting effects. Â In February 2012, the Ford's theater also formed a Center for Education and Leadership which gives tourists and local communities a chance to discover the Lincoln's period of presidency.
The Ford's theater is not just a theater that stages several plays and musicals but it is a great historical monument that celebrates the life and legacy of the President, Abraham Lincoln. The Ford's theater has also staged a grand opening gala that has been attended by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. The performance has starred Audra Macdonald, Kelsey Grammar, Jessye Norman Katie Couric, Jeffrey Wright and many others. Â The overall improved interior and intimate atmosphere has attracted many theater lovers since then. The Ford's Theater tickets offer you a chance to watch the museum exhibits in the house at your own pace.
