Five Flags Center
The heart of downtown Dubuque, Iowa features a multi-purpose sports, arts, and convention facility we know as Five Flags Center. Named for the five flags, Five Flags Center is Dubuque"s block of entertainment.
The facility is the Tri-States home for quality entertainment ranging from the best family programming, to exciting sports and the nation"s top touring performers.
The entire block of entertainment, Five Flags Center comprises the renovated historic Five Flags Theater and Five Flags Arena. The Center"s Theater is home to the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, ballets, and broadway shows.
While, home of Dubuque Thunderbirds Hockey, Five Flags Arena features also concerts, sporting events, and family shows. Named for the five flags that flew over Dubuque; the Fleur de Lis of France, the Royal Flag of Spain, the Union Jack of England, the French Republic Flag of Napoleon, and America"s Stars and Stripes, there"s always a lot going on at Five Flags Center.
The Fie Flags Theater was constructed as the Majestic Theater in 1910 and has since nurtured the performing arts. The theater was sold to local prominent businessmen Harker Brentnal Spensley, Sr. and C. H. Eighmey who brought about massive renovations in the facility.
The City later commenced construction on a hotel at the place. However, after launching a successful campaign to save the Theater, the Five Flags Theater reopened on March 13, 1976.
The attraction of the Five Flag Center, Five Flags Theater is currently the home of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra and high school musicals, and also features occasional concerts and ballet productions.
The other main attraction of the Center, Five Flags Arena was conceived as part of a project to rehabilitate the Five Flags Theater. The multi-purpose facility opened in 1979 with a concert given by Bob Hope.
At present, the Five Flags Center Arena can accommodate a crowd of up to 5,200, and can be transformed from a basketball court to a ice skating rink overnight. The facility features one side of permanent seating; the other three sides are bleachers, some for Loras College basketball, and big concerts.
With all of the amenities that event organizers need for their special events, the Five Flags Center is what you"re looking for. In 2004, Spectator Management Corporation, SMG, took over operations of Five Flags Arena.
The following year, the Arena was closed during the summer for concessions, entrance, and renovation. The Five Flags Center Arena was the former home of the Dubuque Fighting Saints hockey team; but today, the Dubuque Thunderbirds hockey team of The CSHL calls the facility its home.
